Bottom Line

Perched above the charming town of Positano on the Amalfi Coast, B&B Casa Nilde is known for the hospitality of the family that runs it: they go above and beyond to make stays special. With only six rooms, the three-pearl property is small, but each room is cheerful and contemporary, and has a balcony with a gorgeous view out to the ocean. Rooms have flat-screen TVs, kettles, and mini-fridges stocked with free water -- which might be needed at the end of the day, as the stairs going to and from the property number in the 600s. That being said, it's possible to walk the road back up or take a bus stopping outside the property. Travelers wanting something on the water and quiet should consider Hotel Puppetto, set on a quiet pebble beach about a 15-minute walk from Positano's center.

Oyster Hotel Review

B&B Casa Nilde

Scene

Charming, family-run bed-and-breakfast with gorgeous views of the bay

Charming from the start, with a low-slung white exterior topped by a red-tile roof, this hotel is owned and run by two brothers, who are wonderfully friendly and helpful. A very small entryway is meant for practicality, with a small reception area clinging to the top of stairs leading down to the rest of the hotel, which is built along the hillside. The terrace at the back, which is great for evening drinks or just catching some sun, has pretty, modern furniture and beautiful views to the water. Most who stay here are vacationing couples, though the Family Room option also means a few smaller families and groups of friends stay here, too.

Location

Long walks required at this out-of-center property

Located above Positano's center, B&B Casa Nilde is within walking distance of both the town and beach, with a 15-minute-or-so walk to town and 10 to 15 minutes on foot to the beach. On the way back up to the hotel, guests should opt for the road, as the stairs clock in at 600-plus and can be challenging -- typical in these towns. If that's too long of a walk, there's also a bus stop right outside the hotel for Positano stops, and one farther up the hill for busses running along the Amalfi Coast.

The town is a quieter option than Amalfi or Sorrento, but there's plenty of places to eat and drink in the center, and there are a few restaurants and little convenience-style stores within a five-minute walk of the hotel. Naples International Airport is about four hours by train (though look ahead as times vary drastically depending on time of day) and an hour and 20 minutes by car.

Rooms

Spacious, light, and welcoming rooms with excellent balcony views

Each of the property's six air-conditioned guest rooms are decorated in yellows, purples, blues, or greens -- in the tiled floors and bedding -- that draw on the local style for inspiration. Rooms are spacious and open thanks to their simple white furnishings and walls (though wardrobes do tend to run small). Their crowning feature is the sea view from each of the furnished balconies.

Standard amenities include 32-inch LCD TVs, kettles, safes, and mini-fridges that come with free bottled water. Housekeeping is meticulous with daily cleans (to the point that some guests have found clothing they've left out folded). Bathrooms come with showers, hairdryers, and Demana toiletries. The only quibbles are that some rooms only have one towel hook (though the balcony provides a great drying alternative), and there's nowhere to put bottles or toiletries besides the shower floors.

Features

Delightful daily Italian continental breakfast

The property really lives up to its name when it comes to the included breakfast: the continental morning spread is excellent, with ample options including cakes, pastries, yogurt, and fruit. Freshly made coffee is available throughout the day. Given that it's a bed-and-breakfast, it's low on other features, so there are no full restaurant, pool, gym, or spa facilities offered. Wi-Fi, however, is free and available throughout the property. Parking is off-site and cost 20 euros per day at the time of our visit in October 2017.
