Bottom Line

Casa Cuccaro B&B is a small family-run property in Nocelle, a quiet hamlet on the terraced hillside offering sweeping views over Positano. This value property is a bit difficult to reach and potential guests should be comfortable climbing steep inclines on narrow staircases and ancient streets. These same attributes makes it popular with hikers, and dozens of trails throughout the Lattari Mountains start right here. Its five simple rooms have en-suite bathrooms and balconies with sea views that are rivaled only by the views from the lovely rooftop terrace. It's worth comparing with the nearby B&B Mamma Rosa Positano, which lacks the en-suite bathrooms, but offers homemade breakfast and dinner.

Casa Cuccaro B&B

Scene

Warm, family-run bed-and-breakfast clinging to the hills above Positano

Above the tourist crowds on a hillside, the Casa Cuccaro B&B is a calm and relaxing guest house with spectacular views of the Mediterranean from its stony perch. At this height, it’s possible to see the island of Capri, and the views here are the main attraction. The welcoming rooftop terrace is overrun with potted plants and set with several tables for two, draped in cheery lemon-print tablecloths. Apart from the dramatic views, the place is warm and homey, with a frilly touch or two. Traditional architectural details like arched doorways and vaulted ceilings pair with ceramic-tile floors and wood furnishings. A common living room lounge has lime-green couches tightly packed around a small fireplace and a flat-screen TV, and there are a few other quiet nooks to sit in throughout the house, but no formal lobby or reception desk. Couples looking for a romantic, if somewhat secluded, retreat are the main guests, with small groups of hiking enthusiasts also making a base here.

Location

In the mountain village of Nocelle, a 25-minute drive from Positano

The Casa Cuccaro B&B is in the small hamlet of Nocelle, on a hillside about 1,500 feet above Positano. It can be a bit difficult to reach, especially for older travelers or anyone with disabilities as the streets are narrow, winding, and steep. A narrow stone stairway leads up to the bed-and-breakfast. There’s little around the small village other than a few other B&B's and a local restaurant. Getting down into Positano can take 25 minutes by car, public street parking is expensive (and payable only by coins), so some enthusiastic guests opt for walking even though it's about a 55-minute hike, and the walk back is all uphill. Once in Positano, the island of Capri can be reached by boat in about 30 minutes. Hikers appreciate the proximity to the numerous mountain trails that start in or around Nocelle, including the Path of the Gods, which can be reached from a trail right from the B&B in 35-minutes.
