Hotel Montemare

Founded in 1950 by the Cannavacciuolo family, Hotel Montemare is run by the same family today. Its greatest assets are the breathtaking views of Positano's cliffs, town, and adjacent sea, available from rooms, the bar, and restaurant. Colorful bougainvillea, white wrought-iron railings, and clay tile roofs dominate the exterior, while beautiful Vietri painted tiles, old-fashioned furniture, and gilded artwork are found inside. Colorful details such as blue mosaic tiling on the bar and patterned throw pillows add charming touches. Ample seating allows guests to view the Mediterranean Sea and cliffside, which most do immediately with their free welcome drink at the bar. Being a bit outside the town center, this hotel has a quiet, relaxed atmosphere best suited to romantic getaways.

Hotel Montemare has a great location in Positano, a bit removed from the hubbub of the town center, yet within a 10- to 15-minute walk. The beach, port, and dozens of shops, bars, and restaurants can be reached on foot, though it may be hard for travelers with limited mobility. Guests arriving by ferry will likely need to pay a porter to take luggage to the hotel. Those arriving by car can park in a nearby lot for a fee. Ferries from Positano's port run to Capri, Amalfi, Sorrento, Salerno, and Ischia. Sorrento is a 30-minute drive, Amalfi is a 45 minutes, and Naples is about 90 minutes away, though this can greatly increase with traffic. Public transportation is available between major cities. 

Visitors should be aware that there is one main road through Positano, and most of the travel through town is done via steep steps and pedestrian alleys.

The 23 rooms here are lovely, although on the traditional side. All have slightly different styling, but guests can expect white wood and wrought-iron furniture, beautiful Vietri patterned tiles, and fabrics in neutral or colorful hues. Potted orchids, gilded mirrors, and framed artwork add charming touches. Rooms have either furnished or Juliet-style balconies, and most guests agree it's worth upgrading to a sea-view unit. Standard amenities consist of air-conditioning, minibars, flat-screen TVs, closets, seating areas, coffee machines, and free Wi-Fi. Some units add whirlpool tubs inside or on balconies. Well-sized bathrooms have rainfall showers, bidets, hairdryers, and toiletries. Bathrobes and slippers are also provided.

All of the features at Hotel Montemare revolve around dining and imbibing. Firstly, the all-day Faro Bar has shaded and outdoor seating with beautiful sea views. This is where guests can redeem their free welcome drink coupon -- typically a glass of wine or Champagne -- as well as free breakfast in the morning. The buffet spread consists of typical continental options plus some hot fare, such as eggs, pastries, cold meats and cheeses, and yogurt. A coffee machine is available and waiters will also make espresso drinks.

The restaurant, Il Capitano, occupies a large outdoor terrace with gorgeous views of the sea and Positano. It's open for lunch and dinner, serving highly regarded fresh pasta, seafood, pizza, and more. Room service is available 24/7.
