Bottom Line

The three-pearl Hotel Onda Verde is a romantic destination hotel that’s a favorite of couples celebrating honeymoons and anniversaries. The family-run, boutique hotel is carved into the rugged Amalfi coast cliffs directly above the majestic Mediterranean, in the quiet village of Praiano. It’s not isolated per se, but there are few restaurants and attractions within walking distance. The 25 rooms are clean, comfortable, and individually decorated in a traditional style that features beautiful hand-painted tilework. Free on-site parking, a restaurant with spectacular views, and an outdoor pool enhance its appeal. An alternative worth considering is the three-pearl Hotel Margherita, which has comparable rates and views.

Location

Carved into the Amalfi coast cliffs, directly above the Mediterranean in the village of Praiano

The Hotel Onda Verde has six levels perched on the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast in the small fishing village of Praiano. It’s about a six-minute drive (or 20-minute walk) to the center of the quiet village, and there are a few restaurants within a two- to five-minute walk. There is also a bus stop at the hotel entrance. While it doesn’t have a private beach, the Onda Verde offers direct access to a public beach that’s only a few minutes' walk away. It's midway between Amalfi and Positano, each at opposite ends of the coast, and both are around a half-hour drive away, but can take much longer to reach during the busy summer season. The luminous Cave of Smeraldo is an eight-minute drive while Villa Rufolo, a historic castle in hilltop Ravello where composer Richard Wagner spent a good amount of time, is a 35-minute drive. It's a 45-minute drive to Sorrento and 75 minutes to Salerno. Naples International Airport is about 90 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Clean and individually decorated rooms with beautiful tilework; some rooms have balconies

The hotel's 25 rooms are individually decorated in a traditional style, but they share many common design elements and possess similar layouts. The high ceilings and white painted walls give them a bright and airy ambiance. Each room has a dominant color (typically an earth tone of beige, brown, or green). Bedspreads tend to match the drapes and sometimes the padded headboards. Antique-style wooden furniture includes armoires, nightstands, desks, and padded chairs, though the most distinctive aspect of rooms are the locally sourced ceramic tile floors with hand-painted majolicas. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, and electronic safes.

Bathrooms also feature hand-painted tile floors and walls in white and jade or gold colors that give them an opulent and ornate look. Most bathrooms have walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads and glass doors, but some have shower/tub combos with whirlpool jets.

The rooms are clean and offer enough space for comfort, coming in progressively larger Standard, Superior, and Deluxe categories. All have king beds, and Deluxe Rooms add twin sleeper sofas. Like the rest of the hotel, rooms feature spectacular views, and many have balconies with enough space for a couple of chairs. While rooms are generally quiet, some noise can be heard in units on the lower levels.
