Hotel Villa Bellavista

This family-run boutique is housed in a big traditional Mediterranean building with large arched windows and a white façade. The front of the structure is partially hidden behind lush trees and plants on a narrow pedestrian street accessed via steep steps from the main road. The rear side of the hotel, however, overlooks the sea and the surrounding lemon groves and gardens. The entrance is marked by two small stone lions perched atop small red columns, and several sets of steps with colorful tiles. Clad in traditional painted tiles and with just a couple of couches, the lobby is basic and a little old-fashioned, as is the rest of the property. To some, this traditional style is cute in that it evokes Italian movies from the '60s -- but to others, decor is more dated than charming. 

Villa Bellavista is located on a narrow alley a long set of steep steps from the main road in quaint Praiano. The area is quiet and residential, but there are several bars, restaurants and shops within walking distance after climbing the steps. The property offers access to two tiny beaches located several hundreds of steep steps down. They’re small concrete platforms built on the rocks, but they’re secluded and have good snorkeling. Praiano is a 20-minute drive from picturesque (and busy) Positano, and there is a bus stop a short walk from the property with service to several nearby towns and beaches.

The hotel has 20 airy rooms, 16 of which feature furnished balconies or terraces with striking sea views. All units are spacious, but decor is bare bones, with tiny wooden night stands, off-white wrought-iron bed frames, and a simple wooden desk with a chair. Colorful tiles in the traditional Amalfi Coast hues (mustard, pink, and blue) add some local charm, but rooms are otherwise devoid of decorations. Standard amenities include tiny TVs, free Wi-Fi (although there are complaints of spotty connection), air-conditioning, hairdryers, and minibars stocked with water, a couple of sodas, a bottle of beer, and a bottle of wine. Bathrooms are clean and unexceptional, with shower/tub combos and a few toiletries. 

With stunning sea views, good homemade food and both indoor and outdoor seating, the rooftop restaurant is a definitive highlight at Hotel Villa Bellavista. A free, full breakfast buffet is served here every morning, and dinner consists of a set four-course menu of traditional regional cuisine made with produce grown on-site, quality pasta, and fresh fish (or meat on request). The hotel also has a private boat for day trips to Capri and famous Grotto dello Smeraldo, and a tiny pool lined with loungers and plants. The pool is mostly in the shade and closes during lunchtime, but it is a good spot for a quick dip or a lazy afternoon. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, but there have been complaints of spotty connectivity. Porter service can be requested for a fee.
