Proprietor Peter Boogaard filled this home with his favorite things -- little dogs, and the smell of bakery. The dining room's centerpiece is a farmhouse table under an antique chandelier, with fine china on display alongside mason jars filled with candy bars. Taper candles are always lit in the welcoming common space, where guests often share the couch with two friendly Jack Russell terriers. The vast majority of visitors here are international couples.

Located on a narrow street just off of Dam Square, Boogaard's is within walking distance of almost all of Amsterdam's central sights. Despite being right in the heart of the city, this quiet side street is sheltered from the surrounding hustle and bustle. Convenient transport links include Centraal Station, which is a 10-minute walk away, while bus and boat trips leave from around the corner. This is the historic center of the city, and is also within the boundaries of Amsterdam's famous Red Light District (De Wallen).

Both the Jack Russell Room and Pug Room have a modern decor differentiated by thematic accents indicated by their namesake. Little statues and assorted printed pillows echo the adorable theme, with hardwood floors, Persian rugs, and beautiful chandeliers keeping the style more classy than kitsch. There's no doggy breath here either, with essential oils scenting the air along with fresh flowers and tastefully arranged house plants. The fireplaces are a nice addition for Amsterdam's chilly winters, and each room has a cozy sitting area stocked with guide books and maps of the city. White-tiled bathrooms have heated towel racks and walk-in rainfall showers.
