Bottom Line

Boogaard's Bed and Breakfast is a two-and-a-half pearl, two-room B&B, which despite its hectic central location, offers a little haven of peace. Though it's a relatively humble 18th-century home, the owner provides top-notch service. The rooms are individually decorated with cozy sitting areas around a fireplace, flat-screen TVs, laptops, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. A fine breakfast, homemade deserts, and other treats are included, along with access to two stocked wet bars. It's geared toward couples looking for an exclusive setting, and a little morning chit chat with a personable host.

Boogaard’s Bed and Breakfast

Fine china and lap dogs

Proprietor Peter Boogaard filled this home with his favorite things -- little dogs, and the smell of bakery. The dining room's centerpiece is a farmhouse table under an antique chandelier, with fine china on display alongside mason jars filled with candy bars. Taper candles are always lit in the welcoming common space, where guests often share the couch with two friendly Jack Russell terriers. The vast majority of visitors here are international couples.

Pedestrian-friendly street in the heart of Amsterdam

Located on a narrow street just off of Dam Square, Boogaard's is within walking distance of almost all of Amsterdam's central sights. Despite being right in the heart of the city, this quiet side street is sheltered from the surrounding hustle and bustle. Convenient transport links include Centraal Station, which is a 10-minute walk away, while bus and boat trips leave from around the corner. This is the historic center of the city, and is also within the boundaries of Amsterdam's famous Red Light District (De Wallen).

Two private rooms with fireplaces

Both the Jack Russell Room and Pug Room have a modern decor differentiated by thematic accents indicated by their namesake. Little statues and assorted printed pillows echo the adorable theme, with hardwood floors, Persian rugs, and beautiful chandeliers keeping the style more classy than kitsch. There's no doggy breath here either, with essential oils scenting the air along with fresh flowers and tastefully arranged house plants. The fireplaces are a nice addition for Amsterdam's chilly winters, and each room has a cozy sitting area stocked with guide books and maps of the city. White-tiled bathrooms have heated towel racks and walk-in rainfall showers.

Rooftop deck, free breakfast, tablet computers, open wet bars

Boogaard's has a stunning roof terrace (accessible, but not fully set up in the winter), with deck furniture, some great views of the city, and an open wet bar where guests can help themselves to refreshments. More extensive goodies are available inside the shared kitchenette that's stocked with free coffee, tea, and snacks. A selection of drinks and freshly baked homemade cakes are on hand at all hours. The free breakfast varies by time of year, with lavish hot feasts made each morning during the high season and a more modest continental breakfast served in the colder off season. Those who want to eat before breakfast is officially served, can arrange for a cold continental meal. Tablet computers are provided in each room with speaker docks and the staff takes care of guests' dirty laundry for free.
