Bottom Line

Citiez Hotel Amsterdam is budget hotel with lively decor and a hostel-like atmosphere located in a residential neighborhood that's far from the city center. The retail mall it's attached to might be one of the most interesting things about the bland area. The property's 71 guest rooms are modern but tiny -- with bathrooms only a few steps from beds -- and some are windowless. Standard amenities include AC, flat-screen TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi, but units lack kettles and wardrobes or shelves to stow clothing. Upgraded units have mini-fridges and Nespresso machines. The lobby doubles as a 24-hour cafe frequented by locals that serves Dutch products and organic coffee, but breakfast costs extra. Travelers looking for a stay closer to Amsterdam's nightlife should look into the hip and well-priced Volkshotel.

Citiez Hotel Amsterdam

Scene

Suburban budget hotel with a trendy cafe and a youthful vibe

Citiez Hotel Amsterdam is part of the outdoor section of the Osdorpplein shopping center, tucked along a long row of retail stores. It sees a lot of local foot traffic throughout the day, but it's on a pedestrian road so it's quiet at night. The lobby is essentially an industrial-style cafe with a reception desk. Shelves packed with mostly organic, local Dutch products line a blackboard-painted wall, with a list of espresso drinks on offer. The opposite wall is exposed brick with tables and chairs, including a few high tops with stools. The hotel attracts a young crowd of mostly couples, and some friends traveling in groups.

Location

In a shopping center, far outside the city center

The hotel is part of a retail mall in Osdorp, a suburb far outside Amsterdam's city center. It's convenient to dozens of local retail stores and fast food joints in the surrounding Osdorpplein shopping area, which also has national chains like H&M. It's just over a 20-minute drive into the city, and there's a tram stop right outside the mall that connects to the city center in 35 minutes. Sloterpark, a large green space around a small lake, is an eight-minute drive (but renting a bike from the hotel may be a better way to explore it) while Amsterdam's central green space, Vondelpark, is about a 10-minute drive or 29 minutes on public transportation. Top tourist attractions like Dam Square, the Anne Frank House, the Museum Quarter, and the Red Light District are about a 20- to 35-minute drive or 40 to 45 minutes by public transit. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is about a 15-minute drive or 24 minutes on public transportation.

Rooms

Modern and basic, some with Nespresso machines, but tiny, and no kettles or closets

Most of the guest rooms are situated at the rear of the building and the area is quiet at night, so despite being part of a shopping center, noise isn't much of an issue. Views are a different story -- typically unappealing mall or rooftop views -- and the Cozy Queen budget rooms have no windows at all. These units have queen beds, but at 129 square feet, they're a bit claustrophobic for some. Smart Double rooms are the same size, but have windows and they feature wall-sized photographs of Amsterdam that help lighten the mood. En-suite vanities that look more like wet bars have stainless steel basins sinks set in wood countertops. A couple shelves underneath contain safes, but they're too shallow to properly stow clothes, and all units lack wardrobes. Bathrooms have separate toilets, and walk-in showers with handheld showerheads that are just a few steps away from the edge of beds. Air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi come standard, but there are no kettles. Upgraded rooms add Nespresso machines and Family Rooms have mini-fridges.

Features

Very limited, with a 24-hour cafe, bike rental, and free Wi-Fi, but fee for breakfast

The hotel's sole feature is its 24-hour allDayCafe. It sells local and organic products to go from its casual storefront space (that's also the hotel's reception), and there's an industrial-style dining room in the back. A breakfast of local cheese and ham, along with cereal, fruit, and organic yogurt is available for an extra charge. The cafe participates in a program called Earth Concepts where profits from bottled water, coffee, and tea help finance clean drinking water projects in developing countries. There's no free parking, but a public garage is right next door. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and there's on-site bike rental.
