Bottom Line

At the confluence of two canals in Amsterdam's Canal Ring, the Hotel Wiechmann has a picturesque and convenient location in walking distance to major attractions. This 37-room boutique hotel has charm to spare, especially for a budget property. The lobby is like a museum of traditional Dutch style, chockfull of antiques and conversation pieces including a suit of armor, a burly grandfather clock, beautifully carved roundabout chairs, even a small cannon. Unfortunately, none of that flair made it to the guest rooms, which are dated, a bit dowdy, and have few amenities, though some have wonderful canal views and large windows. The very steep, narrow stairs and lack of an elevator are also off-putting to some. Those looking for more stylish rooms should consider the Boutique Hotel View, overlooking a quieter canal nearby.

Amsterdam Wiechmann Hotel

Scene

An atmospheric budget property that's a solid choice for tourists and families

The Hotel Wiechmann attracts budget-minded guests on the lookout for historical character in a convenient Canal Ring location. Public spaces are a storybook version of a Dutch home, with wood-beamed ceilings, stained-glass windows, and hardwood floors. The jumble of antiques here only amplifies the atmosphere, with copper kitchen utensils and a massive grandfather clock gathered around a tiled fireplace. But this rich decor doesn't carry through to hallways or guest rooms, which are plain by comparison.

Guests are almost exclusively leisure travelers, and families appreciate the triple, quadruple, and adjoining rooms (with glass doors between, so it's appropriate only for families or intimate groups). Those with mobility issues should note that it could be a challenge to navigate the steep, narrow traditional Dutch stairs, and there's no elevator on site.

Location

Great Canal Ring location walking distance to sights, restaurants, and shopping

In Amsterdam’s famous Canal Ring overlooking the Prinsengracht canal, the Hotel Wiechmann’s central and picturesque location is one of its best features. The hotel is walking distance to the city’s museum district, as well as good restaurants, the nightlife of the Leidseplein, and boutique shopping in the Nine Streets. For the Van Gogh Museum and other sights that are farther away, the Elandsgracht tram stop is a six-minute walk from the hotel. Getting around with a car can be difficult in Amsterdam, with confusing one-way streets and expensive, hard-to-find parking. Consider getting around like the locals do: on a bicycle.

  • Eight-minute walk to Amsterdam Museum
  • Nine-minute walk to Flower Market
  • Nine-minute walk to Anne Frank House
  • 10 minutes via public transit to Vondelpark
  • 12 minutes via public transit to Van Gogh Museum
  • 13-minute walk to Royal Palace
  • 14-minute walk to Rijksmuseum
  • 15-minute walk to Dam Square
  • 15 minutes via public transit to Heineken Experience
  • 17 minutes via public transit to Rembrandt House
  • 17 minutes by foot and public transit to Amsterdam Centraal Station
  • 22 minutes via public transit to Verzetsmuseum (Resistance Museum)
  • 34 minutes via public transit to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Rooms

Adequate but underwhelming rooms lack charm, but some have great canal views

After the charm of the Hotel Wiechmann’s public spaces, its 37 rooms can be a bit of a letdown. Completely lacking in artistic touches, they range from pleasant if dated to downright motel-like, with mismatching curtains, bedding, and wainscoting. Despite the same drab decor and furnishings, large bright windows make the canal-view rooms orders of magnitude nicer. All rooms are carpeted, with furniture that ranges from serviceable-but-dull contemporary pieces to lovely carved-wood ones. Rooms are clean and tidy, and daily housekeeping keeps them spotless. As one would expect given the hotel’s budget category, rooms have few amenities. All have small safes (they’ll accommodate a tablet but not a laptop) and small flat-screen TVs, but they lack minibars, microwaves, and coffee-making facilities. Bathrooms are clean and adequate, with white tile walls; most have showers, though some have showers over tubs. Packets of shampoo and bath gel are included, but hairdryers aren’t provided (unless requested at reception). Convenient for families, the hotel offers triples, quadruples, and family rooms connected by a glass door; cribs are available for kids 2 years and under. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Features

Complimentary breakfast, free luggage storage, free Wi-Fi

As a two-pearl property, the Hotel Wiechmann doesn't offer much in the way of features and services. The complimentary continental breakfast includes only cold options, but an adequate variety: cold cuts, cheeses, bread, yogurt, cereal, fruit, juice, and coffee. However, guests complain that offerings don’t vary day to day. Breakfast is taken in the bright and artfully decorated breakfast room, overlooking the canal and the typical Amsterdam scene of cyclists riding by on the cobblestone street. Free coffee is also offered at the front desk throughout the day, a nice touch as the rooms are without coffee-making facilities.

Free luggage storage is available for those arriving early or departing late, and though there’s no bellhop service, upon request help is available carrying luggage up or down the steep, narrow stairway. Free loaner cribs are available for families with children 2 and under. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
