Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half-pearl Motel One Amsterdam offers low-frills rooms in stylish 2015-built interiors. Near RAI convention center, its business district location is ideal for the corporate traveler and the city center can be reached in 15 minutes by car. Upbeat spaces are outfitted with the chain's bright palettes and funky upholstering, including the 24-hour One Lounge offering a buffet breakfast and array of gin. Unfortunately, there are almost no other amenities, as the hotel lacks wellness and business facilities, and a full restaurant. The 320 modern rooms are bright, equipped with flat-screen TVs and layouts that make the most of the limited space, but they don't have fridges, safes, or kettles. It's worth considering the Ramada Apollo Hotel, which is next to the Rembrandtpark and has more on-site features.

Oyster Hotel Review

Motel One Amsterdam

Scene

Hip hotel offering affordable prices but few amenities

While the hotel's moniker says value, don't judge a book by its cover. Behind the name (and glass-fronted block exterior), it's style all around at the 2015-built Motel One. The chain's signature powder blues and chocolate browns dominate, from the front desk's backdrop of tulips that are in tune with The Netherlands' famous flowers, to the One Lounge, where edgy, sleek decor meets cozy comfort. Expect classic chandeliers over retro sofas and armchairs in bright blues and reds. Mornings are particularly busy in this space, as it doubles as a breakfast room, but the cramped table layout is gone by around 10 a.m. A second-floor terrace, where glass-fronted walls shield it from winds, provides another spot to spread out.

Location

In Amsterdam's business district, but well-connected by public transport

The hotel's Zuideramstel location is well-suited to the business traveler, particularly those going to the RAI convention center a five-minute walk away. Transport hub Amsterdam RAI is equally close and The World Trade Centre is six minutes from RAI's metro. Trams and busses also run from here and Amsterdam's center can be reached in 15 minutes. Both the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are within a half-hour ride, while it's 22 minutes by tram for the Heineken Experience and eight minutes more for Kalverstraat and Leidsestraat shopping streets. An independent gym is adjacent to the hotel, but for outdoor workouts, Amstelpark is a 15-minute walk or bus ride. The area has a good selection of bars and restaurants in the immediate area. Schiphol Airport is 15 minutes by car or express shuttle and Rotterdam The Hague Airport is a 45-minute drive, or 90 minutes by public transport.

Rooms

Streamlined rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, but no fridges, safes, or kettles

Rooms come in 172-square-foot (16-square-meter) Singles and Doubles and larger Queen Rooms, but all tote the same stylish layout. The brown-and-blue color scheme continues with dark-wood furniture that include large headboards, brown carpets with aqua detailing, white walls, aqua bed runners, and metallic brown drapes around floor-to-ceiling windows. A desk, plush chair, bedside charging points, a few shelves, and flat-screen TV are handy, but room amenities are limited and don't extend to fridges, kettles, safes, or phones. Hanging space consists of an exposed rail. Compact but contemporary bathrooms have small showers and free toiletries. All soundproofed rooms have full-length mirrors, hairdryers, and free Wi-Fi. Views on higher floors are better, although they're mostly of office buildings.

Features

One Lounge offering breakfast and cocktails, loaner iPads, and free Wi-Fi

Similar to in-room amenities, hotel features are few and far between. There are no gym or business facilities, and the hotel lacks a full restaurant. It does, however, offer a buffet breakfast with breads, pastries, cereals, and fresh fruit, alongside Dutch cheeses and boiled eggs. Unfortunately, it's often a cramped and crowded affair. The One Lounge is open 24 hours and a charming mix of retro chairs and and leather sofas provides a homey setting for its light bites and 40-strong gin collection. Free-to-use iPads are useful, as are live public transport displays in the lobby. The second-floor terrace has funky woven furniture in striped reds and grays. Amsterdam is known for its bicycles and while wall-mounted wheels in the One Lounge offer an artistic take on the culture, guests can experience it for themselves with the hotel's bike rentals. Private parking requires a fee, while Wi-Fi is free throughout.
