Bottom Line

The 165-room, three-and-a-half-pearl Ozo Hotel combines a smart, contemporary look with amenities geared toward business travelers. It’s far from the city center with little in walking distance beyond businesses and a metro station. Modern rooms are attractively styled and well-soundproofed, and have flat-screen TVs, kettles for coffee and tea, and mini-fridges. But not all guests appreciate the frosted-glass bathroom walls. The restaurant serves three meals a day, plus the Ozo offers a free breakfast, a small gym, and a few meeting rooms. The more eclectically decorated Hotel V Frederiksplein may be a better option for those who want to be closer to the city center, though rates are sometimes higher.

Ozo Hotel

Scene

Business-friendly hotel with a contemporary, unfussy design

Ozo Hotel is a buttoned-up modern property whose location and features are geared toward business travelers. It occupies a building made of glass and stone, situated in a quiet area filled with offices. Inside, decor and design are sleek and contemporary, though not very comfortable and welcoming. The lobby has glossy white floors, a wooden front desk, and a single bench for seating. Some guests have complained of unwelcoming front desk staff, which doesn't help to warm up the stark space. Things feel a little more inviting in the restaurant, or at the least livelier, thanks to parquet floors, soft-gray chairs at clean-lined wooden tables, and floor-to-ceiling windows allowing for natural light. Though couples are the main clientele, business travelers make up a significant portion too and can be seen enjoying a meal or drink in the restaurant or bar in the evenings. Travelers looking for a more relaxed setting might prefer the Hotel V Frederiksplein, where the lobby features a wraparound leather couch surrounding a contemporary fireplace.

Location

Far from the city center with little nearby; metro within walking distance

For tourists, the main downside of this hotel is its location in the commercial area of Amsterdam, Zuid-Oost. Though bustling with workers during the day, the area is quiet in the evening. There’s not much going on, and only a few dining options (and an IKEA) within walking distance. The only tourist-type attractions nearby are the Heineken Music Hall (15-minute walk) and the Amsterdam ArenA, a football stadium that also hosts big-name concerts (22-minute walk). Business travelers, however, will find the Ozo convenient to the many local offices and the Amsterdam World Trade Center (15-minute drive). The city center is a bit of a trek, at 20 to 25 minutes away by car or metro. On the plus side, Bullewijk metro station is only a five-minute walk from the hotel, and there's a bus stop within a couple minutes' walk. It’s around a 20-minute drive, or 30 minutes by bus, to Amsterdam Schipol Airport.

Rooms

Modern rooms with a warmer feel than the common spaces

Guest rooms have a contemporary boutique look and feel a bit warmer than the rest of the hotel. The soft gray-and-brown color scheme incorporates statement walls with flock-patterned wallpaper, and cozy, nubby-textured pillows and bed runners. It’s a modern design, with clean lines, light wooden floors, and trendy padded headboards. Wall-mounted bedside lamps lend soft light, and there are built-in wooden desks, and flat-screen TVs. All rooms are air-conditioned and come with kettles for tea and coffee, mini-fridges, safes, and free Wi-Fi. They lack irons, but those can be found in the hallway of each floor. Room size varies and some, like the Family Rooms, have multiple beds and space for up to three or four people.

Not everyone is a fan of the frosted bathroom walls, which may not suit guests who want a bit more privacy. Still, bathrooms are clean and attractive with tan tile, glass walk-in showers with waterfall showerheads, back-lit mirrors, and hairdryers. There’s not much counter space and the toiletries are in wall dispensers. Some guests have complained of minor housekeeping issues, such as older towels.
