Bottom Line

The Amsterdam Canal Hotel is an upscale, boutique property set in a Dutch townhouse on the outer edge of Amsterdam’s picturesque Canal Ring. The decor at this four-pearl property is one of the highlights -- think: Baroque wallpaper, pendant lighting, and parquet floors. As guests might expect of a 16-room hotel, features are limited; there's only a cozy lounge bar and free breakfast. Beautiful rooms have Nespresso machines and free Wi-Fi, and some overlook the canal. Downsides are minor, but the stairs are steep and there’s no elevator. As of 2017, air-conditioning was being installed. For a sought-after Inner Canal Ring location at similar rates, consider Hotel Sebastian’s, which is situated on one of the most picturesque canals in Amsterdam, though doesn’t include breakfast.

Amsterdam Canal Hotel

Scene

Boutique townhouse hotel with chic modern-meets-classic decor

The attention to detail at The Amsterdam Canal Hotel is high, as chic decor is harmonious throughout the rooms and public areas. The property gets the balance just right; traditional dark details are enhanced by pops of color and modern pieces, and Baroque wallpaper is offset by simple accents like funky floor lamps. The bar is a design highlight, with pendant lighting, parquet floors, wall paneling, and lots of gray with splashes of bright color. The atmosphere is chic -- think: canapes served on blocks of wood washed down with glasses of fizz, plus jugs of cucumber water on the bar top. Outside on the canal-side terrace the view is Instagram-worthy; a scene of canal boats, huge trees, bikes, and a beautiful bridge all in one frame. As an authentic Dutch townhouse, the building is a rabbit warren of staircases leading to various levels, which adds to the boutique atmosphere. This property is geared toward couples looking for an upscale base to explore the city

Location

On the outer edge of the Canal Ring, a 15-minute walk from Museumplein

The property is situated on a relatively busy street where the Lijnbaansgracht and Reguliersgracht canals cross, north of De Pijp. The location is good for tourists wanting to explore the center of Amsterdam without being right in the middle of the touristy crush. The street gets a fair amount of traffic during the day and has a range of shops, bars, and cafes. Tourist sights within walking distance include the Heineken Experience and Albert Cuyp Market (seven minutes), Skinny Bridge (10 minutes), and Museumplein -- for the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk Museum -- in 15 minutes. The Frederiksplein tram stop is only a two-minute walk from the hotel for links to the Anne Frank House and Flower Market in around 15 minutes. Expect a 25-minute drive to Schiphol Amsterdam Airport, or a 35-minute journey using public transport.

Rooms

Beautiful rooms with elegant decor plus extras like Nespresso machines; some overlook the canal

Rooms have a beautiful, modern elegance, with parquet flooring, Eames-inspired chairs, funky floor lamps, and Baroque wallpaper that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home. The details are cleverly balanced, creating a fresh overall look where bolder details are offset by simple white furniture. Even the rooms with black and gold wallpaper still feel chic and light. Each room has a flat-screen TV and free Wi-Fi. As of 2017, air-conditioning units were being installed but not yet up-and-running. A Nespresso coffee maker and kettle are both provided and there’s a minibar (soft drinks are free with some deals). Small glass-fronted bathrooms are modern, with marble details and shower/tub combos. The glass design won’t suit all -- some guests comment on a lack of privacy. Hairdryers, vanity mirrors, and toiletries are provided. Room sizes start at 194 square feet (18 square meters) in the Standard Rooms, which have street views. Deluxe Rooms with Canal View are slightly larger, at 236 square feet (22 square meters). The best rooms have balconies with canal views, and while all are fairly well soundproofed, there is a little noise from the hallway and stairs. It's a historic building, after all. Travelers should note that the staircases are steep and narrow, and there’s no elevator.
