Bottom Line

The Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites has a convenient location near the entrance to Disneyland. A rooftop terrace has a viewing deck for Disney's nightly fireworks display and there is an indoor pool and hot tub. Nice freebies include parking, continental breakfast, and Wi-Fi. Rooms are clean and spacious, but walls and ceilings are a bit thin. This hotel is a solid pick for an affordable Disneyland vacation, but there's no on-site gym or full restaurant.

Oyster Hotel Review

Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites

Scene

Value hotel attracts budget-minded families

Clean but dated is the overall look of the Desert Inn, although it did undergo some renovations in 2014 and has an expanded locker and lobby area. The lobby is fitted with high ceiling and big windows. The hotel and parking garage are surrounded by 1970s-style concrete, but it is mostly covered with fresh palm trees and landscaping. The decor is sparse and not memorable, but the hotel is nonetheless very busy in high season, teeming with families and children. The atmosphere can be noisy, with all the excitement that surrounds a visit to Disneyland.

Location

Across from Disneyland, surrounded by restaurants

Disneyland and its high speed tram are directly across the street. There are also several family-friendly restaurants surrounding the hotel –- a Denny's on one side, a Cold Stone Creamery, Captain Kidd's, Tony Roma's, and iHop on the other. Harbor Boulevard is a wide, busy street, trafficked by tourists and locals, but its sidewalks are spacious and nicely landscaped. Los Angeles International Airport is 34 miles away, anywhere from 45 minutes to double that, depending on traffic. Orange County Airport is 13 miles from the hotel, or about 20 minutes.

Rooms

Basic rooms with mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers

The Desert Inn’s rooms are standard hotel-style, with a pair of beds, ill-matching covers, and dark carpet and furniture upholstery. They are spacious and clean, equipped with nice wooden tables and dressers, powerful air-conditioners (some of which get quite loud), seating areas, desks, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, irons and ironing boards, and hairdryers. Parlor suites have separate bedrooms (one to three) and living room areas. There are no balconies in the rooms, but top floor units are preferable to avoid the sounds of children running around late at night.

Features

An indoor pool and a viewing deck are popular among guests.

As a hotel built for Disney visitors, it offers tickets to the park that can be bought on-site. There is a large rooftop viewing deck expressly for watching Disneyland’s nightly fireworks, which happen directly across the street. There is a game room and indoor heated pool and hot tub, on-site parking, luggage lockers, and coin laundry. There is no bar or restaurant at the hotel, but plenty surround it within a five minutes' walk.
