Bottom Line

The 207-room Diverhotel Roquetas is an all-inclusive, budget chain hotel in need of a facelift, but it can be a serviceable place to soak up the Mediterranean sun. The beach is a short walk away, a golf course is nearby, and there’s a slide and hammock-equipped pool. Guests can dine at the buffet restaurant, or drink and snack poolside, and there are shows, games, and activities nearly every night. Rooms have dated decor and tiny tube TVs, but have nice balconies. Beach-revelers looking for a more inviting, glamorous stay nearby may investigate the Neptuno Hotel.

Oyster Hotel Review

Diverhotel Nautilus Roquetas

Scene

Family-friendly all-inclusive near the beach

Built in 1988 and renovated in 2001, the Diverhotel Roquetas is easy to spot from the road -- it’s a bright purple, circular building, with a large flower on top and a row of flags outside. The effect is more jarring than welcoming. A lovely garden outside is full of palm trees, bright flowers, and beachy shrubs. The open, big lobby is flooded in sunlight during the day and has plants and a giant birdcage. The walls are a loud shade of green, the furniture comfy but woefully outdated. Common areas are bright and inviting nonetheless. On weekends and during holiday season, the hotel is quite a scene. Although the pool and surrounding area is quite spacious, it fills up fast with rowdy families and kids, and the result can feel a bit noisy and chaotic.

Location

Near the ocean, a lovely golf course, and plenty of restaurants and shops

The Diverhotel Roquetas is surrounded by cheerful, green, leafy gardens in the outskirts of Roquetas de Mar, on the gorgeous Costa de Almería in Andalucia. The hotel is a short four-minute walk from the beach and a half of a mile away from Playa Serena golf course. The center of Roquetas de Mar and its historic church and watchtower can be visited by taking a 10-minute drive. Plenty of restaurants, shops, and bars are within walking distance.

Rooms

Unattractive, clean rooms with private balconies, small bathrooms, and outdated decor

Each clean, bright room has a private balcony, although some street views are far from picturesque. Wi-Fi is available, but guests must pay for the privilege if they want to use it in the room (a limited amount of free Wi-Fi time is available in the lobby). The air-conditioning is strong, and linens and towels are soft, plush, and clean. Rooms could use a makeover: austere, ugly furniture and bedspreads with jarring stripes or geometric patterns are hard on the eyes. Tube TVs are outdated. Bathrooms are small but squeaky-clean, with hair dryers and toiletries offered.

Features

A large outdoor pool and a full schedule of activities are the highlights.

The huge, palm-tree flanked pool is tricked out with waterfalls and slides. There is an adjacent hot tub, plus plenty of room to lounge on reclining chairs and hammocks. A big buffet restaurant serves a copious selection of salad, pasta, rice, meat, and beyond for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Guests can order snacks and drinks from Café del Faro Lounge Bar to savor poolside, or burgers and beers from El Velero Bar-Kiosk. The lineup of activities for kids and teens is packed with games and theme days; grown-ups can partake in karaoke and listen to live music. The hotel’s lush garden is lovely, too, and kids can see-saw their hearts out in a playground.
