Bottom Line

Conveniently situated next to the beach and promenade, Hotel Tropicana's prime location is one of its main selling points. The mid-range hotel is clean and comfortable, but its dated decor throughout may be disappointing for some. The 84 guest rooms have the basics -- air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and shower/tub combos, but most have tube TVs and tired bedding. Many, but not all, rooms have a balcony, either with a full or partial sea view. On-site features include a pleasant pool, well-reviewed beachfront restaurant, buffet eatery, and bar. Nearby Hotel Sol Principe promises an equally good location, plus more contemporary rooms and kid-friendly amenities.

Hotel Tropicana

Scene

Beachfront property with mostly dated interiors

With a name like Hotel Tropicana, the hotel makes an obvious attempt at a tropical-inspired exterior. The beachfront location, combined with a thatched roof entrance and tropical plants such as Monstera and banana trees help evoke this vibe, but inside, the decor shifts. The overall style is dated, from the lobby's faux-leather seating in bright red and green, to the buffet eatery's orange, striped cushions and peach linens. The latter's straw ceiling, bright-pink walls, and stone accents are attractive, but there are too many clashing colors and textures that make it feel busy. Undoubtedly the most contemporary space is the a la carte Mango restaurant, with interesting triangle-shaped chairs made of bamboo, dark-wood flooring, and a wood-beam ceiling. There's little to keep kids busy, but low-key couples looking for an affordable beach stay may be content here.

Location

Overlooking the beach and promenade, walking distance to restaurants and bars

Hotel Tropicana has a hard-to-beat location, as it's conveniently situated just beside the promenade and beach. Guests can walk straight out of the hotel and take a short walk across the promenade to grab a hammock or sunbed right on the beach. Along the promenade there are countless beach clubs, restaurants, bars, and shops. Nearby attractions such as Parque la Bateria (11-minute walk), Crocodile Park (27-minute walk), Puerto Marina Shopping (19-minute walk), and Aqualand Torremolinos (29-minute walk) are all within walking distance, too. Malaga Airport is an 18-minute drive away.

Rooms

Basic rooms are well-sized and clean, but dated throughout

Guest rooms at the hotel are similar to the lobby: They're clean and well-sized, but in need of an update aesthetically. Rooms vary based on capacity and view offered -- sea view, pool view, or side view -- but decor wise they are all carbon copies. Each room has the same slate-grey speckled floor tile, popcorn-textured off-white walls, tired patterned bedding, and bamboo furniture throughout. Aside from the dated decor, some features are out-of-date, too, such as the tube-style TVs found in most (a few rooms have flat-screen TVs). All rooms promise air-conditioning, an in-room safe (for a fee), and a mini-fridge. Wi-Fi is only accessible in reception and rooms that are closest to the reception area. Also worth noting, only some rooms promise a balcony, so guests who are hoping to have some private outdoor space should be sure to book accordingly. Bathrooms are basic and outfitted with neutral floor-to-ceiling tiles. All bathrooms have a hairdryer, free bath products, a bidet, and curtained shower/tub combo.

Few kid-friendly options, but there are a small pool and beachfront restaurant

There's little for children to keep occupied, aside from an outdoor pool. The pool is small but in a pleasant setting surrounded by greenery, and there are sunbeds and umbrellas provided for free. Down at the beach, guests can relax in a hammock or rent sunbeds for a fee. Mango, the hotel's a la carte eatery is well-reviewed, and offers gorgeous views of the ocean through its floor-to-ceiling windows. A buffet eatery is open for breakfast and dinner, and half-board options are available. There are two meeting spaces on-site and Wi-Fi is free around reception.
