Bottom Line

Melia Atlantico is an expansive four-pearl property located on the beach in Isla Canela. The hotel is a bit too isolated to explore the surrounding area without a car but the Melia Atlantico makes up for that by providing guests with loads of recreations and dining options. All-inclusive packages are available for eating at the two Mediterranean-style restaurants and two lounge bars are available. There's an on-site spa with a fitness center and outdoor recreational facilities include tennis courts and a playground. The large outdoor swimming pool is a huge draw for families and there's private access (via a long wooden footbridge) to the public beach. Rooms are comfortable and most have sea views. Staff provides evening entertainment for kids and adults. You'll pay extra fees for Wi-Fi and parking.

Oyster Hotel Review

Melia Atlántico Isla Canela by Meliá

Scene

Five-story family-friendly hotel on the beach

The Melia Atlantico is a family-friendly hotel so expect lots of little ones at the beach and by the pool. Still, the property is large enough that couples can find a quiet spot. Tropical touches are prevalent on the landscaped grounds; picture tall palm trees, flowering bushes, and manicured rock gardens. The beach is accessed via a long wooden path, so you can't see the ocean from the swimming pool. Inside, the lobby resembles an atrium with a partial glass ceiling and potted plants. Clusters of garden style furniture are grouped together under white canopies to further the "outdoors brought indoors" feel of the space.

Location

On the beach in Costa de la Luz

The Melia Atlantico is located directly on the beach in the high-end tourist destination of Costa de la Luz on Isla Canela. The surrounding neighborhood consists mostly of luxury residential homes and other hotels, so there isn't much to see or do without a car. Isla Canela Golf Course is a short drive from the hotel. The Portuguese border is also nearby. Expect to pay for parking at the hotel.

Rooms

Lovely contemporary rooms; most have sea views

There are 359 rooms and suites at Melia Atlantico. Each is air-conditioned and includes a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, bathtub, and mini-fridge. Most rooms overlook the beach or the river flowing into the ocean, though these views often include the parking lot. Walls and geometric headboards are painted white. Yellow floral throw pillows and matching curtains add some much needed color. Gray striped carpeting looks worn and could use replacing in some of the rooms. Bathrooms include long vanity counters and free toiletries.

Swimming pools, spa, evening entertainment, and more

Most guests visit Isla Canela for the weather and water; Melia Atlantico delivers with an expansive swimming pool that meanders under the dining room and a separate kids' pool. There's an indoor swimming pool that's part of the on-site spa, which also includes a sauna and treatment rooms. A fitness center has TechnoGym equipment and spinning bikes. The sandy beach is accessed via a long wooden walkway. There are chairs and umbrellas there for guests to use, but no drink service. Tennis courts and a playground are available outdoors and there's an indoor kids' club with toys and equipment. Staff provides evening entertainment for the whole family. There are six desktop computers for guests to use in the lobby. An on-site gift shop sells beach gear, toiletries, and souvenirs. All-inclusive packages cost extra and include free access to the buffet and Mediterranean-style restaurant. Two bars and lounges have cocktails and wine.
