Bottom Line

The lush, pretty Hotel Riu Costa Lago is a mid-range, all-inclusive beach resort that hits all the sweet spots — a prime location across the street from the beach, quality meals and drinks, a handsome pool, activities galore, and a location not far from Torrelmolinos' restaurants and bars. The 256 rooms have balconies and air-conditioning, although the basic decor and old tube TVs could use a serious upgrade. Still, it's one of the best beachfront options in the area.

Riu Hotel Luca Costa Lago

Scene

A great value for a welcoming all-inclusive beach resort on the sea

A diverse crowd of beach tourists flocks to this all-inclusive resort for sand, sun, and relaxation — from couples to families to groups of sun-worshippers looking to party. The white stucco hotel (made up of a four-story and three story building) is big and inviting, flanked by palm trees and a wide, lush lawn. The spacious lobby is airy and beach-y, with cushioned wicker furniture, tile floors, and decorative potted plants.

The hotel takes advantage of its ocean surroundings with plenty of vast windows and balconies looking out on pool and sea. The place is clean and streamlined, but not quite upscale. The restaurant, too, is attractive but not special. Guests can eat outside under a wooden awning.

Location

Across the street from the beach, within walking distance of restaurants and bars

The hotel is on a wide, quiet street only 150 meters from the gorgeous, mellow beach in Torremolinos. A charming promenade with restaurants and bars lines the sand. For a livelier scene, guests can take a short taxi ride or a 30-minute stroll to the center of busy Torremolinos, where buzzing bars, restaurants, and shops abound.

Rooms

Basic, clean rooms with balconies and sunlight

Rooms are spacious, clean, and pleasant, and come with private balconies for plenty of fresh ocean air. The decor is dated and basic -- simple wood furniture, coral and white striped bedspreads, and tile floors. Quality air-conditioning is welcome in summertime, and mini-fridges provide convenience. Check out the stunning views from rooms on higher floors; ask for a room overlooking the pool, or craggy mountains in the not-too-far distance. The tube TVs come from another era!

Features

A big pool and lots of lively activities

The Riu Hotel Luca Costa Lago's big, curvy pool is surrounded by palm trees. Towels are provided, and many guests use them to claim lounge chairs hours in advance; though there are a lot of lounge chairs and umbrellas, this area can get quite crowded. Despite the hotel's proximity to the beach, there are no ocean views from the pool. There’s a shallow kiddy pool, too, and a club offering children’s games and activities. The buffet restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner (covered in the all-inclusive rates), and most have commented favorably on the freshness and variety; guests can also lunch at the pool bar. A lineup of activities such as aqua aerobics and disco nights keeps things lively. Spa services and massages are offered; Wi-Fi comes with a charge. The nearby beach, of course, is the best feature of all.

In the winter, guests can pay for half board instead of a full all-inclusive package if they wish.
