Our 5 Favorite Hotels Reopening for the Spring and Summer

Most hotels remain open throughout the year, even when off-peak season means low occupancy and less-than-ideal weather. But some hotels choose to shutter their doors and windows during this time, triumphantly reopening in the warmer months -- and often boasting some upgrades, to boot! These hotels sure know how to build our anticipation; we can't wait to get back to them! So without further adieu, here are our five favorite hotels that are reopening for the spring and summer.

Hidden Pond; Kennebunkport, ME

Reopening Date: May 2nd

Spread over 60 acres, Hidden Pond features 36 suite-like bungalows and two-bedroom cottages. While each have their own personality, they are all bright, homey, and sophisticated, characterized by pops of color and lodge-like touches (such as stone fireplaces adorned with antlers, and a lamp made from a tree branch). The spa is set up to resemble a tree house, and free yoga classes are held at the organic farm (where guests may also pick fresh flowers and veggies). Another outstanding feature is the outdoor bar and grill that sits on a “sand bar,” with chairs circled around fire pits. This upscale boutique hotel attracts couples with its tranquil environment and top-notch restaurants, as well as families with its cottages that include full kitchens and washer/dryers. The hotel also provides a free shuttle to the beach, which is just a five-minute drive away.

White Elephant Hotel Residences; Nantucket, MA

The big, luxurious one- to three-bedroom units at White Elephant Residences are a good choice for families and groups. Unlike vacation home rentals, these units come with the perks of a hotel stay — daily housekeeping, a seasonal outdoor pool, and a well-equipped fitness center. There’s not much in terms of a communal feel, like you might find at an inn or smaller hotel, but that’s part of the allure for some. It’s just a short walk from the downtown area’s shops and restaurants.

The Dunes on the Waterfront is a quiet, dated (but cozy) retreat in busy Ogunquit, set on the banks of a picturesque tidal river. Room offerings vary wildly: Standard Rooms have run-of-the-mill, kitschy motel decor with floral print curtains and boring pine furniture, but Superior Rooms have extra space, bigger bathrooms and vaulted ceilings. If you’re going all-out, the homey vibe of the Two-Bedroom Waterfront Cottage can’t be beat, thanks to its full kitchen, views and screened-in porch. Families with kids will likely appreciate the hotel’s abundance of outdoor space, free rowboats, and heated outdoor pool.

A Little Inn on Pleasant Bay; Cape Cod, MA

Reopening Date: May 24th

Little Inn on Pleasant Bay is exactly what an inn should be — peaceful, charming and relaxing. The inn’s historical architecture features a Main House (originally built in 1798, and once a hiding place for slaves traveling the Underground Railroad) with classic hardwood floors. What sets A Little Inn apart from other area inns and hotels is the fact that there are no televisions on the property, so guests can truly get away (although there is free Wi-Fi access, so tech junkies can still get their fix). Guests of this mid-range B&B will enjoy views of the bay and the Adirondacks, a delicious breakfast, and charming English hosts.

Winnetu Oceanside Resort; Martha’s Vineyard, MA

Winnetu has plenty of on-site amenities for guests looking to enjoy the warm weather.

The Winnetu, a massive property (for Martha’s Vineyard) with gorgeous views and a location within a quick walk of the beach, doesn’t come cheap. But guests will appreciate that the majority of activities are included in the room rates. The rooms are simple but comfortable, and refreshingly decorated in a colorful, coastal-cottage style. All rooms offer the amenities for cooking and dining in, but the on-site gourmet grill is a delicious option for dining out as well. Although it’s a short drive (or free shuttle) to Edgartown’s Main Street, the resort offers plenty to do on-site — including yoga on the lawn, weekly seasonal clambakes, two outdoor tennis courts, a heated outdoor pool, and a putting green. The resort mainly caters to families, who often opt to book the more spacious cottages or multi-bedroom suites.
