There’s certainly no shortage of places to get massaged, scrubbed and buffed to a high gloss shine in the Big Apple: New York Magazine has lists 682 spas and salons in Manhattan alone, without countless smaller venues still waiting to be profiled.
Surprisingly though, if you’re staying at one of the newer hotels in the Lower East Side—Hotel On Rivington, Thomson LES, Gem Hotel SoHo, for example—you may find it tougher to suss out the best spots (or any spots, really) to get your relaxation on. Don’t stress. While this neighborhood’s spa gems are a bit tougher to spot, they’re worth the extra effort takes to locate them.
The Lost Girls (LES locals) are devoted fans of Mama Spa, located just south of Rivington at 141 Allen Street. This full-service health and wellness center offers everything from aromatherapy and Shiatsu massages to anti-wrinkle facials and thermal salt soaks in their in-house Jacuzzi. While we love the super-clean treatment rooms and the warm, accommodating staff, one of the most refreshing parts of our experience is paying the bill: We can score a 60-minute massage, facial and steam room session for less than we’d pay for most hour-long treatments in midtown.
For nails, you’ll definitely want get Priti: This salon located 35 East 1st Street at has become a cult favorite among the eco-and health-conscious set who come for the rosemary-mint or ginger-orange pedicures and stay for fragrant facials administered by gentle estheticians. Because every scrub, polish, and lotion in the spa is organic and earth-friendly (even the slippers are bio-degradable), expectant moms can relax and enjoy their services without worry.
