Bottom Line

Upscale Tierra del Sol is an upscale time-share community spanning 600 acres. It includes Aruba’s only 18-hole golf course and a Spanish-inspired clubhouse with a range of amenities, including a stunning pool, day spa, fitness center, hair salon, tennis courts, and stylish restaurant. An ever-changing stable of Condos, Villas, and Estate Homes are available for resort guests to rent as home-away-from-home alternatives to traditional hotel rooms. Individually decorated layouts range from two- to five-bedrooms, but maintenance issues can be an annoyance. Many residences back right onto the golf course with sweeping views to the Caribbean Sea, and some even have private pools. Tierra suits golfing fanatics and families seeking an upmarket timeout, though the short drive or shuttle ride to the beach can be a drag. For something right on the beach, try Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort -- but it's adult-only.

Tierra del Sol Resort & Golf

Scene

A sprawling enclave with an upscale vibe, Mediterranean aesthetic, and an emphasis on seaside golf

Grand Mediterranean architecture in warm terra cotta tones and bougainvillea gardens in brilliant fuchsia set an elegant tone on arrival at Tierra del Sol (land of the sun) -- an ever-growing villa-meets-golf resort community spanning 600 acres. The grand clubhouse, stunning classical pool, and many villa residences unfold along the upper edge of the sweeping 18-hole golf course. It's a wonderfully rugged, cactus-strewn expanse that often deals with fierce trade winds from the Caribbean Sea enveloping it. A Sotheby’s office, golf shop, reception area, and an upscale restaurant comprise the main Clubhouse which neighbors the huge main pool, which feels like an escape to somewhere in the Spanish countryside. Scores of privately owned Condos, freestanding Villas, and Estate Homes unfold, complete with street signs, throughout a series of mini-neighborhoods with names like Las Rocas (the rocks) or Bella Vista (beautiful view). Wide, winding roads edged with neat succulent gardens and lofty palm trees conjure New Mexico or Palm Springs, while architecture predominantly continues the Mediterranean theme. Avid golfers, diners visiting the clubhouse restaurant, residence owners, and resort guests with families are all here, but golf is the star of the show.

Location

Northwestern Aruba, a four-minute drive from beaches, restaurants, and nightlife

The property resides in Noord’s peaceful Malmok Beach area, in the island’s northwest, about a 25-minute drive from Queen Beatrix International Airport and slightly inland from the west coast -- essentially a long stretch of Aruba’s famed white-sand beaches. The closest are Malmok and Boca Catalina Beaches (both a four-minute drive or a 20-minute walk). There’s also Arashi (four minutes) and Hadicurari Beach (six minutes by car), and there are plenty more beaches to choose from up and down the coast, depending on the vibe beachgoers seek. The Palm Beach strip in Aruba’s high-rise resort area is teeming with restaurants, bars, and nightlife. It’s about an eight-minute drive from the property. Renting a car can make sense and free on-site parking is provided throughout the Tierra del Sol.

Rooms

A choice of luxury Condos, Villas, and Estate Homes, all individually decorated and fully self-contained

Privately owned residences include a wide range of Condominiums (two- and three-bedroom); Villas (two-, three-, and four-bedroom); and Estate Homes (four- and five-bedroom). Homes unfold throughout the various mini-neighborhoods that make up the Tierra del Sol community, and each area has its own architectural flavor. While all residences are designed for upscale living, each has been given its own interior decor look, which varies from home to home, so decor in one home may satisfy some guests but feel outdated to others.

All units have kitchens which are fully-equipped with everything required to cook (stoves, ovens, microwaves, coffee machines, toasters, blenders, and dishwashers). Some residences offer two-story layouts and most have outdoor terraces or patios. Many back right onto, or overlook, the golf course, with sweeping, uninterrupted views to the Caribbean Sea. Regardless of category, all units come with linens, safes, telephones, air-conditioning, laundry facilities, and private parking. Free Wi-Fi is provided in each rental.

Mediterranean-inspired buildings are composed of two or four attached apartments ranging from 1450 to 1675 square feet, and can sleep between two and six people. Villas are freestanding and come with private pools, also accommodating between two and six depending on the layout which averages between 1500 to 2100 square feet. Villas come with some extra perks like free airport pickup and free daily breakfast.

Estate Homes are all custom built with open plan living areas, expansive pool decks, and al fresco barbecue settings. These homes can accommodate between eight and 10 people, with layouts spanning up to 6,000 square feet.

Given the scale of this place, and the individual residences, it's no surprise that maintenance issues can occur.

Features

An incredible golf course, outdoor pool, fitness center, tennis courts, premium restaurant, and a spa

The 18-hole championship golf course is the main attraction here. All golf carts come with GPS and there’s a beverage cart service doing the rounds. Hotel guests all receive 50 percent off golfing fees.

Another major highlight is the spectacular classical pool and whirlpool that neighbors the clubhouse. There are plenty of shaded and unshaded sun beds on offer, with more available on an expansive terrace adjoining the pool area, with great golf course views. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are offered in the upscale restaurant, simply known as The Restaurant at Tierra del Sol. Indoor seating overlooks the golf course, while the terrace takes in views of the golf course and gorgeous pool. There are weekly specials, like surf and turf night and discounted wine nights.
