Bottom Line

There’s a common misconception that the budget White Beach Apartments are located on a beach, or at least within walking distance of the sea -- but both locations are actually a 10-minute drive from Aruba’s most popular beaches. For independent budget travelers who prefer to avoid the high-rise scene, these properties are a solid choice: rooms are stylish (if a bit worn), kitchens are well-stocked, and the privacy is hard to beat. Outdoor pools provide places to swim at both locations, but beyond a grill there's not much in the way of features. Sasaki Apartments is worth a look for similar amenities. Its pool is bigger and it's closer to Eagle Beach, but rates will be higher and the style is dated.

White Beach Apartments

Scene

Low-key apartments for independent travelers

With two locations in Aruba, the White Beach brand has a bit more style than most apartment-style hotels in this category on Aruba. These secluded, low-key apartments are a refreshingly cheerful addition to their somewhat dreary neighborhoods. There isn't a lobby or any communal spaces at either property, and the social vibe is kept to a minimum. The apartment-style suites are outfitted with just enough to please independent travelers: fully stocked kitchens, private hammocks, and enough towels to last for a week at least. The reasonable prices, small pools, and location away from the high-rise crowds are what draw the mostly European couples and families to stay here.

Location

Hard to find properties, about a 10-minute drive from the beach

A glance at the website for the White Beach Apartments gives the impression that both locations are near a body of water -- they do have the word “beach” in their title, after all. Unfortunately, the beach is not within walking distance of either property, and guests will need a car if staying at either. It's a 10-minute drive to Palm Beach or Eagle Beach, but there's little in the way of entertainment, dining, or drinking in the immediate area around both outposts.

Both locations can be hard to find -- in fact Googling one location will send you to a cemetery, and locals are often unfamiliar with either property. The best bet is to call the owner for specific instructions before arrival -- she's almost always on-site and gives out her number to facilitate communication throughout the stay. There are restaurants, shops, and nightlife in Palm Beach, and even more options within a 15- to 20-minute drive away in downtown Oranjestad. Chef’s Table, a concept restaurant, is between a five- and eight minute-drive from the properties depending on the location. Otherwise, the island’s biggest grocery store plaza is less than a 10-minute drive away, which comes in handy for stocking the kitchens. Expect a 20-minute drive to the airport.

Rooms

Modern rooms with well-equipped kitchenettes

The soundproof, apartment-style rooms at both locations are modern-looking, though there are a few signs of wear and tear, like scuffed walls and stained pillows. The tasteful decor could best be described as functional-chic: It mostly sticks to grays and whites, with a few pops of color here and there to keep it from looking too boring. The sitting room has a clock and some art on the walls, which help liven up the space. The small, bare bedrooms are the only oversight. All to be found in them are wood cabinets, a flat-screen TV, and a stiff, boxy-looking bed set on wood slats instead of springs, making sleeping here somewhat uncomfortable. Blackout shades are a nice touch, though.

Bathrooms are generally narrow and simple, though they do have hairdryers. They lack outlets and toiletries (not even a bar of soap here). The rooms come with a generous supply of towels, though there’s a chance that this is related to a lack of cleaning services. During our two-night stay we didn’t receive any housekeeping service, and other guests have given similar feedback for even longer stays.

The highlight in each unit is the outdoor patio. It’s private, with yellow wooden chairs, a table, and a colorful hammock to properly enjoy the famous Aruban breeze. Those who want to cook in the room will also appreciate the kitchen amenities: a mini-fridge, ample cookware, sink, and stovetop. Thankfully, the kitchens aren’t as barebones as the bathrooms and bedrooms. Extras like dish soap, toasters, microwaves, and coffeemakers are included.

Features

Small pool, barbecues, and beautiful tropical landscaping

The grounds at both locations are not expansive, but each feature a small pool. Low-hanging trees and an incessant breeze means these pools don’t stay as impeccably clean as they could, but they’re still a pleasant sight and at least offer plenty of shade on a hot day. Each location also has a barbecue for common use and lovely tropical landscaping throughout the properties. The hotel offers free and functional Wi-Fi.
