Bottom Line

The Brookstone Lodge is nothing extraordinary when it comes to amenities or design, but it's conveniently located just off the I-40, within a five-minute drive of Biltmore Village and about 10 minutes from downtown Asheville. The budget property has 73 rooms, which are outfitted with decor typical of a chain hotel and come with flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges -- some have private whirlpool tubs. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a double-sided fireplace in the lobby, a heated indoor pool, fitness room, and free daily continental breakfast. A good value, the hotel is ideal for families -- a theme park is just next door -- or travelers looking for a no-frills place to stay while exploring Asheville.

Brookstone Lodge

Scene

Standard chain with occasional rustic flair

While the dry stacked stone walls on the hotel's exterior and around the fireplace in the lobby gives the place a certain rustic charm, in most ways the Brookstone Lodge looks and feels like a chain hotel, with little distinguishing decor or colorful personality. That said, the lounge area around the two-sided fireplace in the lobby is inviting, with wood ceilings, warm lighting, and cozy leather couches. The breakfast room also feels homey, with a fireplace, wood touches, and flowers pots on each table. The outdoor patio with iron tables and chairs is pleasant for soaking up warm weather or having a picnic. Guests include families, business travelers, and budget travelers, and most use the hotel as a comfortable place to rest after spending the day exploring.

Location

Off the highway, an easy drive to Biltmore and downtown

Located just off of Interstate 40, the Brookstone is within easy access to the mountains and anywhere in and around Asheville. The downside is that there are no restaurants or places of interest within walking distance. By car, it's 10 minutes from downtown and within five minutes of Biltmore Estate and Village. Chimney Rock Park, a hiking spot with fantastic views, is about 35 minutes away by car. Guests can reach Dupont State Forest in about 45 to 50 minutes, and enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and swimming.

Rooms

Clean and convenient with flat-screen TVs -- some with hot tubs

A private hot tub, found in a select number of the Brookstone's King Rooms, is the only distinguishing element of the property's guest rooms. Decor is otherwise pretty typical of a chain hotel, with earth tone touches against white bedding, wooden headrests, and dark patterned carpeting. All rooms are clean and convenient, with armchairs, modern flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers. The granite-tiled bathrooms have shower/tub combos. Some rooms facing the highway can be a bit noisy.

Features

Heated indoor pool and free breakfast

Set in a somewhat dim room with low ceilings and a beige tile deck with patio chairs, the heated indoor pool is the big selling point of the Brookstone. Free daily continental breakfast, Wi-Fi, and parking are also great conveniences and money savers. The hotel is equipped with a business center and a 50-person meeting room with white conference tables, floral patterned carpeting, and beige curtains. There is a gift shop convenient for snacks and last-minute souvenirs, and given its proximity to Biltmore Estate, the hotel offers Biltmore Winery packages at a discounted rate.
