Bottom Line

The Giotto Hotel & Spa Assisi's central location in historic Assisi, just a short walk from the Basilica of St. Francis, is a major draw. Built in 1899, this charming, historic property features a restaurant with a terrace, a quaint cafe, and a full-service spa (complete with a sauna, Turkish baths, a hydro-massage spa tub, and a plethora of available treatments); however, there is no on-site fitness center. Rooms are large and offer views of the Umbrian Valley or medieval alleys. Although rooms facing the street can be noisy and some feature two twin beds pushed together, overall the Giotto is a lovely upscale pick for couples and families.

Hotel Giotto Assisi

Scene

A great location and gorgeous views attract leisure travelers

Built on the foundations of a medieval building and opened in 1899, the Giotto Hotel & Spa blends in well with medieval Assisi. Named for the Italian painter and architect Giotto di Bondone -- who painted several large frescoes at the nearby Basilica of St. Francis -- it's a visually appealing hotel, with an elegant lobby, dark woodwork, and classic decor in a red-and-gold palette. Perhaps due to its central hilltop location, the Giotto draws mostly tourists, including tour groups, but a small smattering of business travelers also stay at the hotel on occasion.

Location

Set right in the heart of history, it's a short stroll from the Basilica of St. Francis

Giotto Hotel is nestled in the heart of medieval Assisi, about a three-minute walk from the famed Basilica of St. Francis. St. Clare Basilica and San Rufino Cathedral are also less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

The Assisi train station, Basilica of Santa Maria Deglia Angeli, and Porziuncola Chapel are about two miles southwest of the Giotto Hotel & Spa Assisi, so guests can either drive or take a nice walk. Perugia San Franceso D'assisi-Umbria International Airport is about a 20-minute car ride away, and Perugia is just slightly further (about 25 to 30 minutes) in the same direction.

Rooms

Spacious rooms are sparsely decorated, but feature gorgeous views.

The Giotto Hotel & Spa has 77 rooms on six floors. Rooms are spacious and come in a number of different configurations, including four types of suites. Room decor has a minimalist (read: sparse) vibe, with hardwood floors, blank white walls, and dashes of crimson in the curtains and bedding. They all have flat-screen TVs with digital channels, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi.

Views of the lush Umbrian Valley and the surrounding towns of Perugia and Spoleto can be seen from most of the rooms; other rooms overlook Assisi's medieval alleys. All rooms have in-room safes, and some combination of wood parquet floors and gold-leaf canopy beds, living areas, and terraces. Chocolates, slippers, and bathrobes are also available.

Features

The spa and on-site restaurant stand out at this upscale property.

The hotel's large hydro-massage spa tub -- with a miniature waterfall -- is a lovely spot for a post-sightseeing soak. The luxe spa also includes a Turkish bath (or steam room), a sauna, and a long menu of various massages and beauty treatments. However, there is no on-site fitness center or pool.

Numerous restaurants are within walking distance of the hotel, but the on-site restaurant offers a fine-dining experience with gorgeous views that can be spotted either from indoors, or outdoors on the restaurant's terrace. The restaurant also boasts a sexy wine cellar, as well as a free American-style breakfast buffet, and there is a small coffee shop.

This is a pet-friendly property, and guests may also appreciate the free in-room Wi-Fi and parking.
