Bottom Line

The 72-room, mid-range Acropolis Select Hotel is a simple, modern hotel in the heart of Athens, within walking distance of many of the city's top tourist sights. The understated and stylish lobby is home to a relaxed and airy bar, and a white-tableclothed restaurant serves that a daily American breakfast buffet (other meals can be arranged). Rooms are compact and basic in style, but comfortable and modern enough for tourists looking for a pleasant place to sleep in between sightseeing; many have private balconies. Travelers looking for mid-range hotels in the heart of Athens' historic center could also try Acropolis Museum Boutique Hotel.

Acropolis Select Hotel

Scene

Understated and modern, with a slight nautical theme

The Acropolis Select celebrates internationalism, with a line of flags hanging outside its doorway and five clocks set to different times above its elevator. Modern and simply elegant, the Acropolis Select has a bright, window-lined lobby of wood tables and sleek, dark leather couches. Zeus, the lobby bar, overlooks the rest of the lobby from its raised dais, home to sinuous wooden bar, sleek leather tables, and chrome-and-leather stools. The Parthenon Restaurant -- accessed via glass doors in the lobby -- is outfitted with white-tablecloth-covered tables, red upholstered chairs, and round gold-rimmed mirrors. The Acropolis Select somehow achieves an almost ship-like feel, with wave-like curves of the bar and reception, simple metal doors, and narrow elevator.

Location

In the heart of the historic city, near many attractions

The Acropolis Select is conveniently located in the heart of the historic city, within a 15-minute walk to Acropolis ruins, a four-minute walk to the Acropolis Museum, a 10-minute walk to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, an eight-minute walk to the Arch of Hadrian, and a 10-minute walk to the Plaka district. The hotel is also close to a metro stop, tram station, and bus lines, making it easy to get around the city. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, cafes, and boutiques in the busy surrounding area.

Rooms

Compact and modern, if a bit bland, with private balconies off most

Rooms at the Acropolis Select are simple and modern, if a bit bland and chain-inspired in style, with hardwood floors, cherrywood furniture, and brown and green accent colors in the drapes and walls. All are quite small, especially Twin Rooms, but the built-in closet and TV save them from feeling cramped. The bathrooms, also compact, are bright and clean, and have combination shower/tubs, though not all tubs are full-sized. The hotel provides a two-in-one shampoo/bath gel. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, tea kettles, and minibars. Most also have a private balcony with two chairs and a side table. There is high-speed Internet, but it comes with a fee.
