Bottom Line

The main draw of mid-range Astor Hotel Athens is its stellar location near tourist-friendly Syntagma Square. The Astor has capitalized on it by creating a top-floor restaurant with sensational views of the Acropolis;, where a free and tasty continental breakfast buffet is served each morning. However, save for a pair of outdated meeting rooms and a cafe/bar, there are no other features here. Like common areas, the 131 air-conditioned rooms are dated and showing wear, but they come with mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, plus balconies in some. For travelers wanting to be close to the sights of Athens and don't mind low-frills rooms, this is a good pick. For a more design-savvy spot that delivers similar views, consider the Acropolis Ami Boutique Hotel

Astor Hotel Athens

Scene

Dated and worn hotel with stellar location and Acropolis views from rooftop terrace

Location, and not design sense, is the main selling point at this centrally situated 10-story hotel. Astor Hotel Athens has a lobby done up in a dated style of heavily-veined marble floors, gold wall panels, and brass-trimmed glass, with some old-fashioned gray couches and chairs for lounging. Rooms have an equally outmoded look, and wear and tear is evident throughout the property. On the plus side, guests are more likely to be hanging out on the rooftop terrace when at the hotel, where breathtaking vistas of the Acropolis and Athens are on full display. Indoor and outdoor seating is available here. Most guests are leisure tourists, and the availability of quad rooms means that families and groups of friends have accommodation options.

Location

Prime setting for vacationers, just off Syntagma Square

Being only a three-minute walk from Syntagma Square, the Astor Hotel Athens is blessed with an ideal location for sightseers -- Plaka, the Benaki Museum, Ancient Agora, the National Garden, and the Acropolis Museum can all be reached in 12 minutes or less on foot. Better yet, shops and eateries abound in the area (because of the proximity to the Greek Parliament, sometimes protesters do too). Travelers interested in going farther afield can utilize the Syntagma and Monastiraki metro stations, which are a six- and eight-minute walk, respectively; trains connect the former to the airport in about 40 minutes.

  • Three-minute walk to Syntagma Square (aka Constitution Square)
  • 10-minute walk to Plaka
  • 11-minute walk to Benaki Museum
  • 11-minute walk to the Ancient Agora
  • 11-minute walk to the National Garden
  • 12-minute walk to the Acropolis Museum
  • 18-minute walk to the Parthenon
  • 13 minutes to Athens Railway Station (aka Larissa Station) via public transit
  • 14 minutes to the National Archaeological Museum via public transit
  • 31 minutes to Mount Lycabettus via public transit
  • 46 minutes to Athens International Airport via public transit
  • 48 minutes to the Port of Piraeus via public transit

Rooms

Rooms are basic and worn, but come with TV and fridges

Rooms are plain and outdated, done up in beige tones and laminate wood furnishings. Carpets and furniture are showing wear and tear, plus some past guests have reported hard beds. Nevertheless, they're clean and equipped with independently controlled air-conditioning, work desks, mini-fridges, safes, small flat-screen TVs, and free (albeit spotty) Wi-Fi. Simple tiled bathrooms have shower/tub combos, magnifying mirrors, hose-style hairdryers, and well-sized counters. Family Rooms with four single beds are available. Some units also have balconies, including a few with their own Acropolis views.

Features

Scenic rooftop restaurant where free breakfast buffets are served

The top feature here -- both literally and figuratively -- is the rooftop restaurant. Aptly named Bella Vista, it has banks of windows as well as a broad dining terrace, both of which are designed to provide breathtaking Acropolis and city views. It serves a free continental breakfast buffet with delicious Greek yogurt, cereal, fruit, cold meats and cheeses, and pastries, plus a selection of international dishes later in the day. Guest who don’t require a side-order of scenery can order from the room service menu or retreat to the lobby’s street-facing cafe for a drink or light bite. Both indoor and outdoor seating are available. Other amenities include a 24-hour reception desk; two outdated meeting rooms; laundry services; and free, though somewhat spotty, Wi-Fi. Note that this hotel has neither a business center nor a gym. It doesn’t have dedicated parking either, but there is a covered pay-for-use garage nearby.
