Bottom Line

The 115-room Athens Cypria Hotel is a reasonably priced three-pearl property near Syntagma Square, adjacent to Ermou Street, a well-known shopping area, and within walking distance of the Acropolis and the old town of Plaka. Most of the rooms are small, but they have balconies, and a few have views of the Acropolis. Furnishings, however, are dated and worn. Superior and Luxury Rooms are larger, and have whirlpools. All rooms include minibars, satellite TV, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. While there's an Internet corner in the lobby, there's no full business center or fitness center. A buffet breakfast is provided, and the on-site Annabel Cafe Bar offers cocktails and a wide wine selection, and light snacks.

Athens Cypria Hotel

Scene

A conveniently located hotel with renovated common areas

The Athens Cypria's lobby received much-needed renovations in mid-2016: aging black leather couches and chairs were replaced with modern table sets and bright orange couches, and brown marbled columns were re-painted stark white. Accent lighting lends the space a hip, futuristic look.

Next to the hotel is Annabel Cafe, a renovated bar with geometric carpeting, lime green and black seating, and cool decor elements like exposed hanging bulbs and vintage tripods. With outdoor seating and large, open windows, Annabel's offers great people watching, in addition to light food and drinks.

Location

In the heart of Athens

Athens Cypria's greatest selling point is its location. It's central to most major historic attractions, shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. It is three blocks from Syntagma Square and about a 10-minute walk to the Acropolis (of which some rooms have a view). Other nearby attractions include the Plaka, shopping on Ermou Street, and the Psiri neighborhood for evening fun. The Syntagma metro station is about a five-minute from the hotel, making it easy to get around Athens. Athens International Airport is about 35 minutes away by car, or 50 minutes via public transportation.

Rooms

Small, except for Superior and Luxury Rooms

Rooms at the Athens Cypria, most of which have balconies, are brightly painted but small, and the furnishings are dated and show wear in places. Superior and Luxury Rooms are larger (Luxury Rooms have separate seating areas with couches) and have whirlpool tubs. Rooms have built-in armoires, worn desks, and cheap-looking wooden chairs. Carpets, which range in color from blue to green to red, are old and well-worn. Rooms come with satellite TV (on flat-screens and tube-style models), air-conditioning, minibars, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos, and come with shampoo, shower gel, and soap, but guests have complained about broken showerhead hooks.

Features

Free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and bar next door

The Athens Cypria offers free breakfast to guests who book directly through the hotel, in a large, split-level buffet area. It consists of a mix of American and Greek breakfast items, and is generally well-regarded. The Annabel Cafe next door offers room service, though its focus is more on wine and cocktails than food. The hotel has a two-computer Internet corner, and offers free in-room Wi-Fi.
