Bottom Line

On the fringes of downtown Athens, the lower-middle-range Evripides Hotel is reasonably priced and located a 15-minute walk from the Parthenon. The 62 clean, pleasant rooms have balconies, flat-screen TVs, and en-suite bathrooms. The mostly youthful guests are often found on the rooftop terrace, which has an evening bar and offers panoramic city views, including of the Acropolis and Philopappos Hill. The free breakfast can be served either indoors or outdoors on a seventh-floor terrace also with excellent vistas. While the immediate neighborhood is a bit sketchy, travelers are within walking distance of some lovely areas, including the historic Roman Agora district. There are a fitness room and sauna, guest computer, and free Wi-Fi throughout, but no full restaurant. Still nearby and also with a rooftop terrace, the Arion Athens Hotel is slightly better located.

Evripides Hotel

Scene

Friendly, budget hotel with rooftop terrace overlooking Athens

Close to Monastiraki metro station and within walking distance of top sights, the Evripides is bright and modern, despite its somewhat-dirty exterior and not-so-great neighborhood. Inside, the brightly lit lobby has carved ceilings, green and red marble floors plus matching club chairs, and black-leather sofas. Alcoved Grecian statues honor the country's rich history, while handy wall maps and a chalkboard with tourist directions help guide visitors towards top sights. Cream-stone stairs are winding, or there are two elevators to reach the seventh- and eighth-floor terraces that offer lovely views of Philopappos Hill and the Acropolis.

The breakfast room is a simple affair with wooden tables and chairs, large windows, and an old typewriter on display. Blue-mesh sun chairs match brightly painted walls on the rooftop terrace's "Blue Point," where evening drinks and mezze are served every evening. Proximity to Ermou's shopping street and historic Plaka district make the Evripides a popular choice among travelers seeking affordable rooms close to the sights.

Location

In a grittier part of town, but close to the sights and the metro

The hotel's immediate surroundings aren't the classiest, but overall, the location is convenient. Most of the city's offerings can be reached on foot: Three minutes from Psiri; six minutes from Monastiraki metro station and flea market; and the Roman Agora and coffee-lovers' haven Thissio and Syntagma Square are under 15 minutes away. The Parthenon and Acropolis can be reached in about 15 minutes on foot. Athens International Airport is a 30-minute drive or 90 minutes by public transit.

Rooms

Air-conditioned rooms with balconies, flat-screen TVs, and Wi-Fi

Available as Singles, Doubles, or Triples, rooms are nothing fancy but clean and furnished with the necessities. Simple wood furniture, including marble-topped desks, is accented by neutral-tone or burnt-orange walls and blankets in similar tones or pale blue. Ancient Grecian-inspired artwork along the walls adds character. Some doubles are two twin beds pushed together, but this isn't uncommon for Greece. Wardrobes offer plenty of hanging and storage space and stock extra pillows and blankets. All rooms have balconies, either Juliet-style or furnished, and some offer spectacular views.

All rooms have double-glazed windows, although higher-floor ones may experience noise from the rooftop terrace. Standard amenities include mini-fridges, small flat-screen TVs, phones, and safes. Infant cribs can be provided. Bathrooms are tiled in two shades and come with shower/tub combos, although baths are small and showers are handheld. Towels are replaced daily, and there are also hairdryers and toiletries. Wi-Fi is free in all rooms.

Features

Rooftop terrace, free breakfast, and fitness room with sauna

The eighth-floor rooftop terrace has superb views and serves mezze and traditional Greek drinks in the evenings. There are chairs and small tables that get lots of sun, but the deck lacks umbrellas. All rates include a free buffet breakfast of breads, feta cheese, and cold meats, as well as cereal, yogurt, and fresh fruit alongside tea and coffee. It's typically served inside the breakfast room, though it can also be taken on the outside terrace. The lobby has a relaxed lounge seating area and a computer that's free for guests to use. A small gym with floor-to-ceiling mirrors and parquet floors has a few cardio and weight-training machines. Also in this area is a sauna. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
