Bottom Line

This mid-range, 45-room hotel is a clear favorite for families, couples and older travelers desiring a quiet, safe and convenient location. Rooms are modern and clean. Common areas include a library, a small rooftop deck, and a cute children's' playroom with a Little Tykes house, toys, books and markers. The location in the heart of Plaka is excellent, and within a 15-minute walk to the Acropolis. Younger travelers looking for a slightly trendier vibe may want to consider the similarly priced Athens Center Square.

Hermes Hotel

Scene

A quiet, well-located mid-range hotel that draws families and couples

Easily seen from the street, large flat-paned windows showcase the simple lobby with white marble floors, a small seating area, and a mural depicting the islands of Greece. Just beyond the dark wood reception desk, a group of five comfortable chairs flank a flat-screen TV. Additional hang out spaces include the library, where guests can borrow a book or game, and a small rooftop garden for sunbathing or a cocktail in the evening.

Location

Tucked on a quiet side street in the heart of Plaka

The hotel's Plaka location is very convenient, as it is just a stone's throw from the main shopping district and a 15-minute walk from the Acropolis. It's a 10-minute walk from metro stations both to the airport and Pireaus. The Hermes is on a quiet street and is also walking distance from Syntagma Square, where the changing of the guards happen every hour and the hop-on hop-off tourist buses stop.

Rooms

Modest but (mostly) modern

The hotel's 45 rooms were renovated in 2004, and have wood flooring and accents of burnt orange on the walls and bedding. White marble bathrooms have tub/shower combinations that are modern, but some could use some fresh grout. While rooms are on the small side, wardrobe units provide nice storage options and are stocked with extra pillows and blankets. Mini-fridges and safes are provided. A few rooms have balconies, but since the street is narrow, there isn't much of a view except the window directly opposite you!

There's a free children's play room for little ones with a Little Tykes house, toys, books and markers.
