Melia Athens is an upscale property located near Omonia Square, and popular with business travelers and tourists. The rooftop (seasonal and unheated) swimming pool and whirlpool are widely popular, as is the Sky Lounge, which serves snacks and dinner. Breakfast is served buffet style, although it's not included in the room price, and the Cafe Mondo serves lunch and dinner. Rooms are sophisticated with neutral color palettes and have Play Station gaming systems. The fitness center, with a range of cardio machines, weight training equipment, a Turkish hamman, and massages available on appointment, is one of the best we've seen at this price point. Melia Athens also has a sauna.
Scene
Classic with artsy touches
The lobby at Melia Athens has traditional bones -- white diamond floor tiles and lightwood wall panels -- but some cool art and a spiral staircase jazz it up. There's a 3-D wall sculpture of a woman wearing a white bikini and a marbled fireplace. One wall is made of glass with a display of green plants behind it. The rooftop swimming pool and Sky Lounge are chicly decorated with a white cabana bed, and offer views of the Acropolis in the distance.
Location
Athens center near Omonia Square
The Melia Athens doesn't have the best location for sightseeing, as the Plaka and its famous historical sights are about a 20- to 30-minute walk away, but there are ample taxis outside the hotel, and the Omonia metro station is right around the corner. Guests have reported that the neighborhood feels unsafe after dark. To stay closer to tourist destinations, travelers might want to compare rates at The Athens Gate Hotel.
Rooms
Wood and earth tones with marble bathrooms
There are 136 rooms and suites at Melia Athens, and each is decorated in calm earth tones and lightwood panels. Flat-screen TVs and minibars are nice touches, as are Play Station gaming systems. A mirror pops out of the work desk, turning it into an impromptu vanity. White marble bathrooms are bright and clean. Some have whirlpool bathtubs. Though there's double glazing on the windows, book a room on a higher floor to avoid street noise.
Features
Rooftop swimming pool, Sky Lounge, and fitness center with a Turkish hamman
The Melia Athens is fully loaded with convenient features, especially for this price point. The crown jewel of the hotel is a rooftop swimming pool and hot tub, though the facility is seasonal. The Sky Lounge is also located on the roof with views of the Acropolis in the distance. Breakfast is served buffet style for a fee, and there's an on-site restaurant, Cafe Mondo, which offers salads, light snacks, and Greek specialties. The fitness room has Technogym equipment and a tiled Turkish hamman -- plus a wood-lined sauna. Massages are available on request. There's free Wi-Fi in the public areas.
