Bottom Line

The 385-room Titania Hotel is a busy and slightly impersonal hotel that's popular with international tour groups and business travelers. Breakfast is included in the price of the room and it gets good reviews for diverse Greek and American offerings. A rooftop restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating and views of the Parthenon. Rooms are basic -- some haven't been renovated, but each has a minibar and flat-screen TV. Bathroom sizes vary. If a swimming pool is a requirement, check out the President Hotel for about half the price.

Titania Hotel

Scene

Big business hotel

The Titania Hotel is one of the largest in Athens, with an expansive lobby that looks like something straight out of a cruise ship. A white marble staircase with gold railings leads to Vergina Restaurant on the second floor. A grand piano, marble columns, and intricate olive design set in the tile floor add to the grand scale. Unfortunately, the lobby is regularly crowded with guests and luggage, so it's not an ideal place to relax. The rooftop Olive Garden restaurant (not connected to the American chain) is far more tranquil.

Location

On a busy city street near Syntagma Square

The streets around Titania Hotel are busy but generally safe for walking. The hotel doesn't have the best location for sightseeing, but it is within a 10- to 20-minute walk of several of Athens' popular destinations like Plaka and the Acropolis. The neighborhood does have graffiti, but that's common in Athens. Just outside the hotel's front doors are kiosks selling beverages and souvenirs. Taxis are plentiful in this area and the Omonia metro station is only a few blocks away.

Rooms

Rooms and suites are relatively basic, but feature flat-screen TVs and modern bathrooms.

While renovated hardwood floors and bright red paint in the standard rooms look nice, chipped wooden nightstands and desks could use updating. Queen-size beds are two twin beds pushed together. Great extras include minibars, flat-screen TVs, and balconies in some rooms. Bathrooms range in size with some offering full tubs. Windows don't open and air-conditioning is individually operated. Past guests have complained of cigarette smoke, though it's usually from other rooms and not a lingering odor. Bathrobes and fancy toiletries are a nice touch. Suites are carpeted, and come with more square footage and balconies.

Features

Rooftop restaurant and charge for Wi-Fi

The Olive Garden rooftop restaurant is the best feature at the Titania Hotel. Lunch and dinner is served there daily, with indoor and outdoor seating options. The glass ceiling adds another dimension of openness that's hard to find in Athens. A small lobby bar is open throughout the day for pastries and snacks while the Vergina restaurant serves a free daily breakfast that gets solid reviews. Guests receive one free hour of Wi-Fi in the public spaces; otherwise, expect to pay for it. Though the President Hotel isn't as nicely located, it does have a rooftop swimming pool and free breakfast for almost half the price.
