Bottom Line

The 192-room upper-middle range, Zafolia Hotel is on one of the Athens' main arteries, within walking distance of Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium. Its common areas are bright, sleek, and elegant, but the rooms don't quite match this aesthetic -- they're a neutral gray-brown, with clunky wood furniture. Higher-priced suites include terraces with seating, jetted tubs, coffeemakers, minibars, and flat-screen TVs, while Classic Rooms, with tube-style TVs, mini-fridges with bottled water, and no coffeemakers, don't match these amenities. There's a roof terrace with a seasonal outdoor pool and bar offering exquisite mountain views, a free breakfast, and a small fitness center and sauna.

Oyster Hotel Review

Athens Zafolia Hotel

Scene

A refined, elegant hotel with exceptional mountain views

With granite outside and wood, leather, and marble inside, this hotel is sleek and elegant, with light streaming in from skylights and large windows. A large wood front desk matches the gray tile in the common areas, while neutral area rugs provide a soft, comfortable touch. Ellinikon, the on-site restaurant, resembles a banquet hall, with green carpets and tablecloths complementing green and light-wood chairs, while Jason Lounge Bar, with its lovely wood features, Pentelic marble floors, handsome tan chairs, and black leather couches, offers more intimacy. A seasonal outdoor pool and bar area provides impressive views of Athens, as does the roof terrace.

Location

On a busy street next to movie theaters and a supermarket

The Zafolia Hotel is on Alexandras Avenue, one of the main streets in Athens, where theaters, car rental companies, and grocery stores abound. Within walking distance are Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium, Pedion Areos Park, public transportation, restaurants, and shops, but the Acropolis and Parthenon are a 25-minute bus ride away. Syntagma Square and Lycabettus Hill are less than a 10-minute drive, or a 20-minute metro ride from the hotel.

Rooms

Premium suites come with plenty of extras, while Classic Rooms fall short

Rooms range from Classic, with minimal amenities, to Olympic Suites with private verandas. Family Apartments are also available. Swirl patterned bed runners, a neutral brown-and-gray color palette, and heavy wood furniture dominate most of the rooms. Classic Rooms cover the basics: air-conditioning, mini-fridges with bottled water, and tube-style TVs, while higher-priced rooms and suites come with stocked minibars, balconies, coffeemakers, and bathrobes and slippers. Although the rooms are soundproofed, guests have complained about street noise. Classic Room bathrooms are small, with shower/tub combos, and no counter space. Some higher-priced rooms have jetted tubs, and more space to place items. All bathrooms come with Papoutsanis Karavaki toiletries.

Features

Nice restaurants, fitness center with sauna, spectacular views

The free breakfast, served in the Ellinikon Restaurant, is a highlight of this hotel. The Ellinikon also serves lunch and dinner, focusing on Greek and international cuisine. The Jason Lounge Bar serves cocktails, snacks, and pastries. Poseidon Bar, the seasonal pool bar, offers snacks and drinks as well. All restaurants offer marvelous city views.

There is a small fitness center on-site with large windows and a nice sauna, but the fitness center has only a handful of machines -- a couple of stationary bikes, an elliptical machine, a resistance machine or two. Concierge and room services are also available. Wi-Fi is free only in the public areas. On-site parking comes with a fee. Cell phones and laptops are available for rent in the meeting rooms.
