Bottom Line

The upper-middle-range, 252-room property sits on the Georgia Tech campus, and is a popular choice with visiting scholars, academic and sporting teams, and parents. Downtown Atlanta is a 10-minute drive or 17-minute bus ride away, with several bus and metro stations within six blocks of the hotel. Rooms here are comfortable and modern, though harbor the same corporate aesthetic in industrial carpeting and muted colors that characterizes the rest of the hotel. A few have remarked upon slightly shoddy cleaning, particularly in the bathrooms.

Oyster Hotel Review

Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center

Location

Directly adjacent to Georgia tech and nearby restaurants, bookstores, and shops

The area around the property hosts the types of stores typical of college campus strips: the Georgia Tech bookstore (a Barnes and Noble) sits across the street from the hotel, and there are lots of casual restaurants and retail shops within walking distance. Downtown Atlanta is a 10-minute drive and is accessible via a bus whose stop is about a half-mile from the front of the hotel (15 minutes total travel time). The subway stop leading to the Atlanta airport is four blocks from the hotel (30 minutes total travel time). Expect to pay for parking.

Features

Indoor pool, fitness center, meeting areas, and free Wi-Fi

Features at Georgia Tech Hotel focus mainly on business travelers. The moderately sized fitness center has several treadmills, a couple of elliptical machines and stationary bikes, some free weights, and a few weight machines; this is a popular amenity and does get crowded. The restaurant serves run-of-the-mill buffet-style food. Taking one’s car in and out of the subterranean parking incurs a fee each time. A small, three-lane indoor pool is suitable for swimming laps; there's an adjacent hot tub. There are many conference rooms and meeting halls on the hotel property, some of which are equipped with audio and projection facilities. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.

Scene

Corporate office aesthetic that suits large groups

The outside of the hotel, with its eight stories and long glass-and-brick structure, resembles a corporate park building. The inside reflects the same design objective, with ample sitting areas, linoleum floors, wood-paneled columns, and primary-color carpeting. The hotel is frequented by those in town for events on the Georgia Tech campus. The hotel has a green policy that includes using recycled paper products, green cleaning products, and a limited linen-changing schedule.

Rooms

Blue and yellow rooms with soft beds, wood lacquer furniture, and coffeemakers

Plain and comfortable is how the majority of guests describe these rooms. Because the property tends to draw a more tech-oriented crowd, one frequent complaint has been a lack of bedside outlets, as well as the inability to hook tablets up to the television. All rooms are nonsmoking, and include air-conditioning, a flat-screen LCD HD TV, iHome alarm clock radios, an iron and ironing board, hairdryer, coffeemaker, and safe. Mini-fridges are available upon request for a fee. Bathrooms have fairly standard plastic shower/tub combinations and granite vanities. Wi-Fi is free. Some rooms overlook an industrial building and the city of Atlanta in the distance.
