Bottom Line

The Ramada Plaza Atlanta Downtown Capitol Park is a bland, moderately priced hotel across the street from Turner Field. Decor at this 375-room, mid-range property is nothing special, but the large property can accommodate big parties, conferences, and bus groups. Rooms are spacious and in good condition, with coffeemakers and flat-screen TVs, though housekeeping can miss details. The Ramada Plaza has a rooftop pool, a large fitness center, a restaurant and bar, and a free shuttle that travels within three miles of the hotel. Guests wanting to be within walking distance of sights may want to check out the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Atlanta Downtown.

Scene

A simply styled chain hotel near the interstate

The Ramada Plaza Atlanta Downtown is simple and comfortable, and does not offer much in the way of scene. Its location across from the interstate lends itself to function and convenience over style and atmosphere. Large groups, business travelers, and tourists tend to stay here. The large lobby has grayish tile floors, and two similarly decorated seating areas with red leather couches, barrel-backed chairs, and splashy, black and white carpeting with a geometric pattern. This modern look is a bit at odds with the gold-framed oil painting on one wall, and the display of pottery in a corner. The mix-match, while somewhat typical of chain hotels, is not exactly easy on the eyes, and this feeling translates to much of the Ramada's decor. The Rock Fish Grille and Extra Innings bar and lounge offer space and sustenance, but are visually un-engaging, both lined with bland, corporate carpeting, and simple wood tables. At the bar are a few, brightly colored leather high-top chairs that seem to have been borrowed from the newer-looking Executive Lounge, and which appear misplaced amongst the bar's less appealing wooden chairs. The Executive Lounge -- for those with access -- is the most inviting common space, with a wall of windows offering expansive views, and reading chairs with a multicolor zig-zag pattern clustered around a flat-screen TV.

Location

About 10 minutes' drive from downtown, across from Turner Field

The Ramada Plaza sits across the interstate (I-85) from downtown Atlanta. The hotel is about a 10-minute drive from downtown, and the free shuttle transports guests there (and to other destinations within a three-mile radius). The hotel is across the street from Turner Field, making catching a Braves game easy. The State Capitol Building is also nearby, about a five-minute drive. The area right around the Ramada is not particularly bustling, though there are a few dining options within a mile, namely Country Buffet and Museum Bar. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta airport is about a 15-minute drive.

Rooms

Large and plain, and sometimes with less than ideal housekeeping

Rooms at the Ramada Plaza Atlanta Downtown are plain and large, with space for two queen beds or one king, plus a desk, cushioned reading chair, and small dresser that also serves as a TV stand. Beige carpeting, gray wallpaper, and simple wood headboards make rooms feel rather bland. However, the extra pillows, and space for reading and working make rooms comfortable enough. Bathrooms are fairly large and bright, and include shower/tub combos with faux-marble tiling. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, flat-screen HDTVs, coffeemakers, and irons and ironing boards; microwaves and mini-fridges may be available on request. While furniture is generally in good condition, this property has struggled with cleanliness -- housekeeping sometimes seems to have been done in a rush.

Features

Rooftop pool, large fitness center, restaurant and bar, and ample meeting space

The moderately priced Ramada Plaza has a number of features, including a large fitness center with several cardio machines and free weights. The hotel has a large, rooftop swimming pool, which offers a place to cool off and take in the view -- though the bland, clay-colored deck feels somewhat cold. While there are not a ton of dining options in the immediate area, the hotel has a simple, well-regarded restaurant and bar on-site, The Grille. Well-equipped for business travelers, the hotel has 10 meeting rooms, some of which are ballroom-size and include projectors and presentation equipment. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. The hotel also has a 24-hour business center. A free shuttle will chauffeur guests within a three-mile radius of the property.
