Bottom Line

The 210-room, mid-range Wyndham Garden Austin is located in South Austin, near St. Edward's University and a 10-minute drive from Austin Convention Center and South Congress restaurants. Rooms are comfortable but have some dated furnishings; all have flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. There are plenty of perks for business travelers, such as large in-room workspaces, a business center with computers and printers, and meeting space galore. Features include a restaurant and bar serving burgers and beer; free high-speed Wi-Fi; a sunny fitness center; and a sizable outdoor swimming pool with hot tub. There is no free breakfast offered. If you’re looking for more of a boutique hotel experience in the same area and price range (and breakfast included), check out the Casulo Hotel.

Oyster Hotel Review

Wyndham Garden Austin

Scene

Comfortable interiors with Texas theme, including star shapes and portraits or local musicians

This five-floor hotel with a rustic, distinctly Texas theme is frequented by business travelers and families. Wooden rocking chairs with Texas-star cutouts and a large mosaic guitar at the entrance hint at what's to come inside. There are portraits of Texas musicians in the lobby, hallways, and restaurant, and more Texas stars carved in the reception area's ceiling and on leather-cushioned chairs.  Other music memorabilia such as guitars and awards are in a glass case in the hallway. Well-maintained interiors throughout include lots of wood, leather seats, and burnt-orange details that appear to be a nod to the University of Texas at Austin's school colors. Given the hotel's location and majority business clientele, the vibe here is typically quiet and laid-back.

Location

In South Austin, easy drive to Austin Convention Center and airport

Wyndham Garden Austin is located in South Austin off busy IH-35, with nothing in walking distance, but plenty a short drive away. The Austin Convention Center can typically be reached in about 10 minutes, while downtown and the University of Texas at Austin are around 20 minutes. Plan for it to take longer during peak traffic hours. Travelers can reach South Congress (a vibrant, walkable avenue with funky shopping and dining) in six minutes by car. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is about a 14-minute drive away, and the hotel offers free shuttle service.

Rooms

Dated but comfy rooms with lots of desk space and mini-fridges

Each of the 210 non-smoking rooms are cozy and bright, but a bit dated due to carpeted floors, orange-hued wood furniture, and striped bedskirts. They have some Southern-inspired flair with red, yellow, and/or orange accents in the pillows, drapes, and artwork that includes Texas-themed prints of longhorns or Austin landmarks. Plush chairs provide extra seating space, but most notable are the huge workspaces ideal for business guests. These larger-than-average desks offer plenty of space, plus there are ergonomic chairs and free Wi-Fi. Other standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, alarm clocks, mini-fridges, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and irons and ironing boards. Bathrooms are spacious and come with shower/tub combos, free toiletries, and hairdryers.
