Bottom Line

Darwin City Edge Motel and Suites is a 60-room value hotel located on the outskirts of downtown. The hotel is around a 15-minute walk from popular dining and nightlife options along Mitchell Street and a two-minute drive from Mindil Beach. Room types ranges from huge Family Suites with balconies, full kitchens, and bunk beds, to much smaller Guest Rooms which are cramped and utilitarian. All rooms come with free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges.  On-site facilities include a swimming pool, a barbecue area, coin-operated laundry, and lobby. Also, breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi are free -- adding to the overall value of the hotel. DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Esplanade Darwin has a bigger pool and full restaurant with a bar, but rates are higher.

Darwin City Edge Motel & Suites

Scene

A small value hotel with little ambience

Darwin City Edge Motel is a small value hotel that is both modern and utilitarian. The hotel has little ambience and few common areas. The only leisure facility is a medium-sized swimming pool but the setting around the pool isn't particularly pleasing, with cheap plastic furniture and artificial grass lawns. Although, the water does offer some relief from the relentless tropical heat. There are plenty of lounge chairs and tables set up next to the pool for guests to relax on, and there is also a barbecue area for those who want to grill. The hotel is equally popular with families, couples, and solo travelers. Many tourists use the hotel as a transit point before traveling on to Mary River and Kakadu National Parks.

Location

15-minute walk to downtown Darwin and a five-minute drive from Mindil Beach and Darwin Wharf Precinct

The hotel is located on the outskirts of downtown Darwin, along Gardens Road. It's around a 15-minute walk from downtown and a two-minute drive from Midil Beach and Darwin Wharf Precinct. Popular restaurants and bars in downtown Darwin along Mitchell and Knuckey Street are around 15 minutes away on foot from the hotel. One of the most popular tourist attractions on Mitchell Street is the Crocosaurus Cove reptile park. Mindil Beach is a long white sand beach that is a popular sunset spot for both tourists and locals. The beach is nice for lounging, but the waters around Darwin aren't suitable for swimming due to crocodiles. There are plenty of dining and nightlife options around Mindil Beach, as well as the Sky City Casino. From April to October a large scale beachside bazaar with over 200 food and goods stalls operates bi-weekly along the beach. Darwin Wharf Precinct is another beachfront area that features plenty of restaurants and bars, as well as a water park and convention center. The airport is around 20 minutes away by car.

Rooms

All rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges.

The rooms at Darwin City Edge Motel are for the most part tidy and modern, though the rooms are basic, utilitarian, and dated. Interiors have sparsely decorated white walls, black or tan wood veneer furniture, and gray carpeting. The bright colored accent walls behind the beds and the small colorful landscape paintings on display help add a little warmth to the otherwise stark modern spaces. Rooms are outfitted with comfy beds, work desks and chairs, balcony seating, dining tables, and roomy wardrobes. Standard amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, kettles, and toiletries. Suites also feature kitchenettes with stovetop burners, microwaves, washing sinks, pots and pans, dishware, and utensils.

Room types include Studio Suites, Family Suites, Guest Rooms, and Family Guest Rooms. The Family Rooms can sleep up to four and have a queen-size bed, plus bunk beds. The Guest Rooms are much smaller and lack balconies. En-suite bathrooms are cramped and have a small wall-mounted sink and a glass shower cubicle, but no bathtub. All suites feature roomy balconies or terraces and are bright and airy with large sliding glass doors. However, the hotel is near the street and noise from traffic can be quite high at times.

Features

An outdoor swimming pool with a barbecue area, a coin-operated laundry, free breakfast, and free parking

Facilities at Darwin City Edge Motel are decent for a hotel in this price range. The swimming pool gets good sun and has plenty of lounge chairs laid out around it. Although, the setting around the pool isn't particularly pleasing as there isn't any greenery and the area is lined with artificial grass, which looks tacky. There is also a barbecue for guests to use, set up next to the pool. The breakfast restaurant overlooks the pool and has plenty of tables. A simple continental breakfast served buffet-style is included in room packages. The restaurant doesn't serve lunch, dinner, or room service. The lobby has a reception desk, a few chairs and a couch to relax on, plus two desktop computers for guests to use. Mineral water and other bottled drinks are sold in the lobby. Reception isn't open 24-hours but there is a lockbox for guests to collect their room keys from, if they have a late arrival. Free Wi-Fi and on-site parking are also provided.
