Bottom Line

A waterfront resort with a 353-slip marina, two tennis courts, a full-service spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and eight event rooms, the massive upper-middle-range Hotel Coral & Marina suits both vacationers and business travelers. Pacific Ocean views are a welcome addition to the rooms and many public spaces. Staggered balconies look onto the marina from any of the 147 large rooms, which include free Wi-Fi and coffeemakers, though only some suites come with minibars or refrigerators. Four restaurants and bars offer solid food choices and buffet breakfasts are included in room rates. The hotel is a 10-minute drive from downtown Ensenada, so travelers wanting to stay in the heart of the city may prefer the more central San Nicolas Hotel and Casino.

Hotel Coral & Marina

Scene

Expansive business and family-friendly oceanfront property with an adjoining marina

With palm trees and manicured grounds winding through its pink-and-white facade and an adjoining 353-slip marina, Hotel Coral & Marina is among the largest hotels in the area. Inside, the decor looks standard for a hotel of its ranking: roomy seating areas in a well-lit lobby, a classic wooden front desk, and polished tile floors. Modern art sculptures and wall prints add character to the otherwise straightforward and sometimes tired-looking interiors. Staggered balconies, outdoor dining, and an oceanfront pool ensure gorgeous views of the Pacific from as many spots as possible. Hotel guests share facilities with marina members, but thanks to the property’s size, it rarely feels crowded and there seems to be something for all visitors, from large groups and business travelers to families with children.

Location

Off a highway just outside downtown Ensenada; getting around requires a car

The hotel sits off a main road just north of central Ensenada, within walking distance to some shops and casual restaurants. While getting around requires a car, the hotel’s location near a major highway and a local road makes it a good base from which to access most tourist sites. It’s an eight-minute drive to the cafes, bars, and shops on First Street downtown, as well as to the Museo de Historia. The San Miguel Beach is 12 minutes away by car. The Valle de Guadalupe wineries are a 30-minute drive away. The popular La Bufadora geyser takes under an hour to reach. It's about a two-hour drive to San Diego, though crossing the border can add time. Ensenada Airport is a 20-minute ride away.

Rooms

Remodeled and spacious, with large private balconies

Well-maintained and comfortable, rooms are available in nine categories, from the 635-square-foot Standard variety to the many suites, some of which have full kitchens and others, three-and-a-half bathrooms. Most rooms were remodeled in 2016, and the decor is simple but tasteful, featuring bold accent walls, contemporary wall prints, and sofas. Furnished balconies are provided in every room and thanks to thoughtful architecture, they have marina views regardless of where in the building they’re located.

All rooms include free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and safes. Coffeemakers and ironing equipment are also provided, though only suite-level rooms have extras like minibars, wine coolers, and refrigerators.

Bathrooms are large, and clean, with plenty of granite counter space by the sinks, though the lighting can be dim. All bathrooms come with shower/tub combos and fixed showerheads, along with hairdryers.

Features

Four dining options, plus two pools and spa services

Features are substantial at Hotel Coral & Marina. Four on-site dining options offer above-average food. The main BC Bistro & Cava restaurant serves a Mexican-Mediterranean fusion menu as well as a plentiful daily buffet breakfast that's included in room rates. Sunday brunch is a standout, as it includes bottomless margaritas, Mexican barbecue, and crepes. The Marina Grill bar and restaurant serves mostly seafood with cocktails on an outdoor deck with a fire pit. It includes an indoor area with nautical themed accessories plus a TV and pool table. Snacks are available at the outdoor Pool Bar. The Arrecife Lobby Bar offers casual fare in a traditional hotel bar environment, which includes a flat-screen TV. Room service is also available.

Several leisure amenities allow for plenty to do on-site. While the outdoor pool is a central feature, with a whirlpool and many surrounding lounge chairs amidst palm trees and marina views, the heated indoor pool is also a welcome bonus. A sanded area by the waterfront offers simple cabanas and a playground set for kids. A decently sized gym is well-equipped with modern machines, free weights, and exercise balls. The hotel’s C Spa offers an impressive range of services, from hairstyling at the beauty salon to a sauna and steam room along with facials and massages. The spa's gift shop sells swimwear and beauty products. Locker rooms with showers are available, and arrangements can also be made for in-room treatments. Two full-size outdoor tennis courts and a ping-pong table provide additional recreation options.

Eight event rooms of various sizes make the hotel a popular venue for professional conferences, weddings, and parties. While the two-computer business center looks slightly neglected, it’s functional. Wi-Fi throughout the property is free.

On-site parking is plentiful, but comes with extra charges. The hotel can also arrange for various shuttle services for extra fees.
