Bottom Line

Abi Bali Resort & Villa is a four-pearl boutique property located in the outskirts of Jimbaran, a short drive from the beach. The 32 units have contemporary decor and most have outdoor bathrooms; One- and Two-Bedroom Suite Villas also have their own private pools. For guests not staying in Villas, there are numerous other places to swim on-site, including a long main pool that's ideal for laps. Other features include a spa with international and Balinese massages and a restaurant where a free breakfast is served daily. Couples wanting to be nearer to the beach (and willing to pay for it) may prefer the Jamahal Private Resort & SPA, but families should note that the upscale property doesn't allow children under 16.

Abi Bali Resort & Villa

Scene

Low-key hotel with mostly contemporary decor and well-maintained gardens

Situated on a small side street off the main road, the Abi Bali Resort & Villa has a simple, low-key look from the outside. Arrival is via a large turnaround area and a huge entryway topped by a tall, pyramidical roof. Inside, the contemporary lobby has carved columns and the quintessentially Balinese ceiling, but black marble floors and black- and lime-green retro couches make it feel a tad more corporate than island-style. Statues, plants, and wooden screens help add a bit more atmosphere. A business center with a couple of computers sits in a corner next to an enormous carved relief depicting scenes from village life. The different parts of the property are connected by cement-tiled pathways lined with well-manicured strips of grass and foliage. There's also a koi pond. The hotel is popular with tourists and business travelers alike, including visitors in town for weddings and contractors with projects in and around Jimbaran.

Location

In the outskirts of Jimbaran, a three-minute drive or 20-minute walk from the beach

Abi Bali is located in the outskirts of the village of Jimbaran in southern Bali. The setting is a fishing-village-turned-tourist-hub with white-sand beaches and good waters for swimming, but not much of a party scene. The property is situated off a quiet road, a three-minute drive or 20-minute walk to the beach. The hotel is just south of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, a 20-minute drive away, and it takes about the same amount of time to get to the center of Kuta. Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park is a 10-minute drive southeast of the hotel, while reaching the Uluwatu Temple takes closer to half an hour. Bali's capital of arts and culture, Ubud, is around 90 minutes away by car depending on traffic.

Rooms

Rooms and villas with simple, contemporary decor, some with outdoor bathrooms and/or private pools

The Abi Bali offers 32 rooms in four room types. Decor is consistent throughout Villas and Junior Suites, and is more contemporary than what's typically found in four-pearl Balinese properties. The look includes gray-and-white marble floors, light-wood furniture, rust and tan accents, and embedded track lighting in the ceilings. Deluxe Rooms are the smallest option, featuring a pale yellow and white color scheme, and bathrooms with tubs and open showers. Flat-screen TVs with cable and DVD players are standard, though they're 32 inches in these rooms, compared to 42 inches in Villas and Junior Suites. The tall mini-fridges are stocked with a few cans of beer and soft drinks, and there are coffee- and tea-making facilities. Junior Suites are the next level up and have large outdoor bathrooms with double vanities, open-air showers, and deep soaking tubs. High-ceilinged One- and Two-Bedroom Suite Villas are also available, and each has its own private pool, garden, separate living and dining area, and fully equipped kitchen with stove, microwave, and cookware. Villa guests get free afternoon tea daily and butler service is available on request. All rooms have free Wi-Fi.

Features

Gorgeous outdoor pools, spa, small gym, restaurant with free breakfast, and 24-hour business center

The resort features a long main pool with a couple of statue fountain features. The pool is split in half by a deck in the middle and partially shaded by a two-story block of rooms on one side. A deck area above the pool has a few lounge chairs with parasols. There are two more lagoon pools surrounded by tropical greenery and bougainvillea, each with a fountain feature and a few lounge chairs; they both have covered pavilions with marble floors and wicker furniture.

The hotel's Koi Spa features a range of Balinese, Indian, and European massages, along with facials, scrubs, wraps, and mani-pedi services. However, the treatment rooms are on the bland side, with generic wood furniture and simple earth-tone drapes. There's also a small fitness center with a treadmill, an elliptical, and a few weight-training machines.

The Abi Bali Restaurant is a bright, semi-open space with marble floors, molded columns, and casual seating at light-wood tables covered with white tablecloths. The restaurant offers a range of European, Asian, and Balinese dishes and an a la carte breakfast is included in room rates. The food quality gets mixed reviews.

The front desk can arrange taxis and local tours, with activities ranging from bungee jumping to elephant rides. Guests get free one-way transfer service to the center of Jimbaran town, but need to arrange their own way back. Dry cleaning and laundry service are also available. The 24-hour business center has a couple of computers and a color printer. Wi-Fi and parking are free.
