Alila Manggis

Buildings of white stone with gray stone accent walls form the quiet and relaxing Alila Manggis, which has a welcoming atmosphere and combines elements of modern and traditional Balinese design. The lobby has an alang alang thatched roof, floors of concrete and polished ivory, white latticed screens, and contemporary seating areas with simple wood furniture. The open-air design makes the lobby feel comfortably chic, and guests can stop by in the afternoon for free coffee, tea, and snacks. Inside an authentic Balinese pavilion surrounded by a lotus pond is the Seasalt Restaurant. Wood tables matched to tan wicker chairs adorn the dining area, while ocean views can be seen throughout; poolside and garden dining are also available. Dark wood floors, lots of greenery visible through open walls, and excellent water views are features at the Spa Alila, which also has a stylish lobby with bamboo accents and comfy gray and beige couches. Outside -- about 10 minutes away by car or 30 minutes by bike -- the hotel's own organic garden has a lovely seating area for dining, while the grounds are exceptional throughout with groves of coconut trees, Mt. Agung views, traditional statues, and tranquil ponds. Guests tend to be families or couples seeking a quiet respite and a natural, healthy vibe.

Alila Manggis is on Balina Beach in a quiet, somewhat remote area. There are other hotels, a grocery store, and a restaurant within five minutes' walk, but for more dining options, guests will have to walk about 15 to 20 minutes. Tanah Ampo Beach is about 10 minutes away, while Padang Bai Beach and White Sand Beach are around a 20-minute drive. Taman Kertha Gosa temple is about 35 minutes' drive, and Bali Marine and Safari Park is around 50 minutes' drive. The Ngurah Rai International Airport is 90 minutes away.

Rooms are stylish and open, with earthy decor that includes beautifully tiled floors, wicker and leather bench seating, and clean white walls. Headboards and sconce light fixtures are made of thatched wood, while flat-screen TVs and teakettles (with coffee, as well) sit atop mid-tone wood cabinets; minibars sit inside. Air-conditioning is in all rooms, as are safes, umbrellas, bathrobes, slippers, and free bottled water. Each room has a lovely balcony or terrace with seating; some have beautiful ocean views and day beds. The open-concept bathrooms have wood vanities decorated with potted orchids, and large wood doors for privacy. Suites have separate tubs and showers, while Superior and Deluxe Rooms have walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads. 

Beach access is available, though the waves can be rough. There's a small stretch of sand, as well as a thatched-roof gazebo with white couches. The outdoor pool has an unusual, inverted pyramid shape and offers gorgeous ocean views, as well as white lounge chairs and umbrellas on a spacious lawn. Modern and traditional Indonesian dishes are served at Seasalt Restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner to wonderful reviews. Guests can also dine at the organic garden, selecting dishes from the Seasalt menu or a separate garden menu. At the Living Room lounge, there's an extensive menu of cocktails and wines, and board games for guests. Aromatherapy, facials, and massages are offered at the full service spa, and there are free yoga and diving classes on certain days of the week. A free area shuttle runs throughout most of the day, and there are concierge services. For a fee, the hotel offers cooking classes, and can arrange for area excursions. There's a business center with a computer in the lobby. Free parking is provided, but spaces are limited, and there is room service, but it has limited hours.
