Bottom Line

This five-pearl luxury resort offers beautiful facilities and rooms for couples and families alike on the southern shores of Bali in the upscale resort area of Seminyak. The 240 suites feature a minimalist take on traditional Balinese styling and come with high-end amenities and gorgeous marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs. Facilities are equally upscale, with a luxe spa using natural products, a 24-hour fitness center, and five infinity pools -- a blessing, given that the beach isn't well equipped for lounging. The Seasalt restaurant is a huge plus, with sushi, ramen, and a catch-of-the-day, and there's a 24-hour coffeeshop, a beach bar, and round-the-clock room service. Travelers shopping around may also want to consider the Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa, Bali nearby, which offers similar amenities.

Oyster Hotel Review

Alila Seminyak

Scene

Luxury hotel with modern decor and a few subtle Balinese touches

Architecture and decor at this luxurious property is more modern and minimalist than many of the more stereotypically Balinese hotels on the island. There are still plenty of local design elements, such as wood-slatted ceilings (that are flat rather than vaulted), a plant wall behind the reception desk, and a stone shrine right in the middle of the property's large grassy lawn. Rooms are housed in four-story blocks spread across the property. The single-story lobby is elegant and contemporary, with lots of dark wood and cream-hued marble, and bright greens integrated throughout the space thanks to multiple vines and potted plants. The hotel attracts both couples and families.

Location

Beachfront location in the chic resort area of Seminyak in southern Bali

This hotel looks out over a lovely beach that's great for strolling, but most of the lounging facilities are kept poolside. It's situated in Seminyak, about a half-hour drive from the Ngurah Rai International Airport. Seminyak is arguably the chicest beach town in all of Bali, where many of the island's most luxurious resorts are located. It's known for its fine dining restaurants and high-end boutiques, and the area's Peitenget Beach is a little more relaxed and exclusive-feeling than some of the rowdier spots on the island, such as Kuta. The hotel itself is within a 20-minute walk of many of the town's inland shops and boutiques. Travelers who want to get out and explore the island will need to rent a car or hire a taxi, however. It's well worth taking a trip north to Ubud, the spiritual and artistic capital of Bali, an hour north of the hotel by car.

Rooms

Elegant and minimalist suites with marble bathrooms; some have balconies and/or ocean views

Even the entry-level Studios and Deluxe Studios at the Alila Seminyak are huge, measuring 46 square meters (495 square feet), not much smaller than the Deluxe Ocean Suites (the smallest suite type available), which measure around 60 square meters (646 square feet) but come with the added bonus of beautiful ocean views from floor-to-ceiling windows. While most units are equipped with king-size beds, there is an 811-square-meter (8,729-square-foot) Penthouse that has three king-size beds (and three bathrooms with showers and tubs) and can accommodate six adults and three children.

Decor across rooms is uniformly luxurious and modern, with high-quality upholstery and linen, marble floors, stone accent walls, and a mix of wood-finish details and screen patterns on accent walls, tables, and lamps, that add some Balinese flair. Wall art is kept to a minimum, with just the occasional carving here and there to add energy to the rooms. Color is mostly limited to pale accent cushions. For some guests, this might provide a welcome relief from the oftentimes over-the-top ornateness typical to Balinese hotels, while others might find the minimalism disappointingly drab. All rooms offer flat-screen TVs with satellite cable, coffee- and tea-making facilities, free Wi-Fi, and safes. Many have lovely balconies with wooden accent walls and plush furniture. Bathrooms are spacious and incorporate a mix of dark-wood closets, ceilings, and mirror frames with marble floors and walls. Additional details include lovely vanity areas, gargantuan soaking tubs situated next to semi-screened windows, and ceiling-mounted rainfall showerheads.

Features

Five infinity pools, luxury spa with fitness facilities, seafood/Japanese restaurant, and plenty for both kids and adults

The amenities at this property are unabashedly luxurious, with a focus on relaxation and pampering. The Spa Alila is a highlight, with all sorts of therapies and beauty treatments using handmade, natural products along with yoga and meditation classes. There's also a modern fitness center with LifeFitness cardio and weight-training equipment and a fitness studio. Five infinity pools are spread across the property, all with plenty of padded lounge chairs and parasols. These include a family pool that's fun for kids, a quiet adult-only pool, and a Private Party Pool that can be rented out for special events. Families can also take their kids to Play Alila, a colorful indoor kids' room with a slide and lots of toys.

Along with 24-hour room service, the hotel offers the 24-hour Coffee Bar with espresso drinks, cocktails, and meals plus a sea-facing Beach Bar that's open until well after sunset. However, the best dining option here is Seasalt, with everything from a grilled catch of the day to sushi and poke, plus a dedicated vegetarian menu with a heavy Japanese influence.

The hotel has its own luxury boutique, Alila Living -- featuring clothing, jewelry, and a smattering of local crafts and gift items. Event spaces for meetings and destination weddings are also available, and the hotel provides wedding services and all sorts of audiovisual equipment. There's also a concierge that can arrange activities, tours, and on- and off-site experiences along with airport transfers, car rentals, and valet laundry and dry cleaning. On-site parking is free and ample. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
