Bottom Line

Situated 25-minutes north of Ubud, this 17-room, upper-middle-range property is simpler than many in the area, but can be a decent value for couples and families looking for the private villa experience. One- and Two-Bedroom Villas are modern and feature full kitchens and private plunge pools, though the decor and design isn't quite as stylish as many properties in Ubud. The hotel also features an on-site restaurant with free breakfast, an outdoor pool, many activities, and a free area shuttle. Guests looking for a bit more style who don't mind being outside central Ubud may want to check out Kamandalu Ubud, though not all of its authentic villas have pools.

Ashoka Tree Resort

Scene

Quiet and simple tropical escape

Tucked off of a major road leading into Bali, this property is a fine choice for families and couples looking for the private villa experience at a slightly lower price point than other properties in the area. That modest discount, though, means that expectations need to be a bit lower. The grounds and buildings -- thatched roof white structures tucked into thick tropical vegetation and gardens -- aren't quite as luxe and stylish. That being said, the low-rise structures dotting the grounds feel authentic, and there are several koi ponds throughout, creating a bit of that tropical magic. The lobby has a high thatched ceiling with light tile floors. It's set with a few tables and chairs, but feels like a mostly functional space. A similar style characterizes the restaurant, a simple space with dark wood furniture and a few wicker pieces that looks out upon the thick green all around. Blacktop and concrete paths weave through the property, leading to the villas and the infinity pool surrounded by a simple wooden deck with a few lounge chairs. The hotel has a small play area for children, and the majority of guests here are couples and families on holiday.

Location

On a jungle-like hillside 25 minutes outside of Ubud

The hotel is located on a main artery that leads up to Payangan from Ubud, about 25 minutes north of the latter. This road is dotted by numerous resorts and high end villas, and though it overlooks a river valley, the foliage prevents any real views from the hotel. Aside from treks and tours through the rice paddies, and a few stray shops and restaurants within a five- or 10-minute walk, there isn't much of interest within walking distance of the property. Ubud Market and Ubud Palace are both located in central Ubud, and there is a free scheduled shuttle there throughout the day. Scenic Mount Batur is about an hour away by road and the town of Payangan, home to the Hanging Gardens of Bali, is about a 35-minute drive to the north. Ngurah Rai International Airport is an hour and 15 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Simple, private villas with pools and kitchens

There are only 17 units here and all are One- or Two-Bedroom Villas with private pools and kitchens. While they are modern and airy, the style is a bit simple, with wood and light tile floors, and basic IKEA-style furniture like dark tables, dressers, and nightstands. Rooms have generous storage and closet space. We spotted a good deal of wear and tear on the furniture, and some of the tiling throughout the villas is chipped or otherwise banged up. All rooms include feature satellite flat-screen TV, DVD player, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and stiff but clean beds surrounded by a mosquito net (necessary, especially during the rainy season). There is a kitchen in each unit as well, with a microwave, sink, small refrigerator, stovetop, dishes and utensils. Each villa has a furnished outdoor terrace (which often functions as the living room in One-Bedroom Villas), as well as a small deck and private plunge pool. The decks could almost unanimously use a fresh coat of paint. Bathrooms are incredibly spacious and modern, with dual basin vanities, a separate granite soaking tub that's situated on a bed of white stones, and a large glass rainfall shower.

Features

Many activities plus an outdoor pool, free scheduled shuttle, spa, and free breakfast

One of the highlights here are the many activities and tours that can be arranged by the hotel, nay of which are provided on site. These include yoga, cooking, painting, and craft classes, as well as trekking, bicycling and fishing. The hotel has a small infinity pool for guests who want a little more space to cool off than their private pool; a small children's area is attached. A free a la carte breakfast is included with the room rate and the on-site restaurant has a large menu featuring local and international fare. Room service is available and the hotel can arrange private candlelit dinners. The property has a small spa with several beauty treatments and massages, the first of which is typically free for guests (check ahead). There is a free scheduled shuttle to and from Ubud. Parking is free, and airport transfers and laundry service can be arranged. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
