Bottom Line

The surf theme at the three-and-a-half-pearl Bliss Surfer Hotel is quirky and playful, and the hotel's numerous features give it a laid-back, upmarket vibe at low prices. The 111 rooms are bright and cheery, with nice balconies, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. Family Suites are available and ground-floor rooms have direct pool access, but lack privacy. The restaurant serves excellent Indonesian and international fare, and the buffet breakfast is extensive, though isn't included in standard rates. A sandy outdoor area adds a casual beach vibe, and the spa provides a range of treatments, but there is no fitness center, and the beach is a 15-minute walk away. Travelers seeking a hotel closer to the sand should consider the boutique Ossotel, though it's more expensive and has less personality.

Scene

Fun surf-themed hotel with low rates that attracts all types of travelers

A surf theme runs throughout the hotel, giving it a fun vibe that's young and kitschy, but manages to be appealing nonetheless. When the hotel's low rates are added to the mix, this is a solid value for central Legian. Suspended surfboards run along the hotel's facade, a motif that continues inside the lobby -- from signs to walls. The beachy style is amplified by extras like the outdoor sandy area with a fire pit, or the lagoon-like pool that partially wraps around the hotel. Palm trees add a tropical touch, as does the attractive hanging plants that dangle over the entrance to Barbora Bar and Restaurant. The restaurant has a wood-paneled bar and high stools, and sunhats donated by past guests speak to a loyal, happy clientele. Indoor spaces are likewise beach-inspired, though the decor has a polished look that keeps things from feeling overdone. The spa, for instance, calls to mind Scandinavian design elements. Given its cheerful vibe and mostly laid-back atmosphere -- not to mention the wide range of rooms (some of which can suit groups) -- the hotel draws travelers from a broad spectrum. Families, friends, and couples are all frequent guests here.

Location

In central Legian, near shops and restaurants; a 15-minute walk to the beach

Set on a fairly quiet road in Legian, the Bliss Surfer Hotel is within a five-minute walk of restaurants and bars along Jalan Legian, though it's far enough outside the main party area to stay relatively calm. There are also a number of local convenience stores right outside the hotel. A school nearby does mean that it can be a bit noisy in the morning. Legian Beach is about a 15-minute walk from the hotel, as is the Dream Museum Zone, home to 3D trick art. Those wanting to reach the busier, party-hard areas like Kuta and Seminyak will need to hail a cab; both are about a 10-minute drive away in opposite directions. Expect a 15-minute drive to reach Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Rooms

Bright, modern rooms with smart bathrooms and nice balconies, some with direct pool access

Rooms have king-size or twin beds, and colorful decor reflects the plentiful natural light that comes through the floor-to-ceiling patio doors. Don't expect a break in the surf motif, as retro prints and wood-paneling are found on many surfaces in the rooms. Built-in bedside tables, desks, and cabinets have attractive blond wood-veneer finishes that help tone down the otherwise busy style.

Standard features include flat-screen TVs (which have an extensive variety of cable channels), air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, electric kettles, minibars, and safes. Deluxe Lagoon Rooms are compact, while Junior Suites offer more space, bigger desks, and two separate daybeds. Family Suites come with modern bunk beds, along with daybeds. Neither of the suites have separate living spaces -- they are simply larger rooms. All rooms have furnished balconies. Deluxe Lagoon Rooms and Family Lagoon Suites have direct pool access, although they are less private. Noise can be an issue in many rooms, from internal bumps and footsteps to clamor from the nearby school in the morning.

Handsome bathrooms, identical in all room categories, have gray floor tiling and smooth concrete walls. Blond-wood vanities, square vessel sinks, and large mirrors come standard, though counter space isn't abundant (which can be a challenge in Family Suites). Black-and-gray mosaic stone tiling lines the walls of the rainfall showers, and toiletries are provided.

Features

Outdoor pool, spa, restaurant, and sandy social area with a fire pit

While this hotel isn't right on the beach, it certainly does its best to bring the shore to its guests. The sandy "beach" area is a popular hangout spot and includes a fire pit and has a Hot Dog Shack slinging grill fare during the day. The Barbora Bar and Restaurant serves excellent Indonesian and international meals, and will even take specific requests for meals not on the menu. The buffet breakfast -- not included in standard room rates -- features an extensive selection of Western and Indonesian dishes. Wave Senses spa provides a range of reflexology and beauty treatments in chic and relaxing surroundings, but there is no gym. Note that the pool, generally quiet and uncrowded, closes in the early evening and doesn't have much in the way of seating. Still, it's a fine place to cool off in Bali's heat. A shop in the lobby sells surfing equipment and clothing. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.
