Bottom Line

This lovely four-pearl, 14-villa resort in the trendy Petitenget area is ideally located within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and the beach. Each One- and Three-Bedroom Villa is outfitted with its own swimming pool, garden, living area, and full kitchen. Breakfast is included and is cooked to order by a member of the staff in-villa; there is no restaurant, but food can be delivered from area restaurants and there's the option of an en-suite barbecue. Spa services can be arranged in villas as well, but there's no fitness center and almost no common areas at the hotel. Parking is free, but the hotel also provides a free airport shuttle and free car service within town.

The Dusun

Scene

Personable, private, and pristine all-villa resort

Though it's technically a four-pearl hotel, this upscale property punches above its class because of the luxe villas with private pools that line the tropical grounds. Bougainvillea forms a pretty archway over the entrance near the guard's station leading up to this exceptionally clean and super-private hotel. With a one-to-one staff-to-guest ratio, the Dusun Villas Bali prides itself on personal attention. The 24-hour reception area is a simple, open-air, slat-roofed hut of sorts, and a gift or treat are immediately offered to arriving guests. There aren't a lot of common areas, but the grounds are well-maintained and beautifully landscaped. Most guests are families and couples on vacation, and the hotel lacks the party vibe of properties further south on the coast.

Location

Near the beach, in the upscale Petitenget area

Located in the lovely Petitenget area of Bali, just north of Seminyak, the property is close to restaurants, shops, and nightlife. Seminyak Square, with it's gourmet eateries, and the TAKSU Bali Gallery are an easy 10-minute walk. The closest beach is also a five-minute stroll from the hotel; the larger Legian Beach is within a 10-minute ride on the hotel's free shuttle, and Waterbom Park is also within a 20-minute drive. Kuta's wild nightlife takes about 20 minutes to reach, including the Poppies area and the streets around the Hard Rock Resort. A free airport meet-and-greet service to and from the Ngurah Rai International Airport is a bonus, and the journey takes about a half-hour.

Rooms

Spacious and modern villas with private pools and garden views

The units at the Dusun Villas Bali are large One- or Three-Bedroom Villas surrounding private swimming pools. Modern and clean, everything is exceptionally well kept and top notch -- luxe might even be an appropriate adjective. Villas are structured in such a way that the rooms arc around private pools (which have lounge chairs) and each has a garden view. The outdoor living areas have couches, dining tables, breakfast bars, and work desks. Tile floors keep things feeling clean even when people traipse through with wet feet from the pool. The full kitchen is also outdoors and is shaded by a high wooden ceiling; kitchen amenities include full-size refrigerators, microwaves, blenders, filtered water machines, coffeemakers, and minibars.

Bedrooms are large and simply decorated. Comfy beds with canopies draped in pretty (and indispensable) mosquito netting create a romantic ambience. There are minimal furnishings -- most in dark teakwood to fit the Balinese style -- and the color scheme is kept very clean and bright with white, yellow, and gold accents. In-room features include flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, iPod docks, free Wi-Fi, stereos, and air-conditioning. Each bedroom has its own large bathroom. Most only have walk-in showers, but some also have shower/tub combos, and all have double sinks and vanities. Twice-daily housekeeping ensures that the suites are spotless; turndown service is also included. Paying attention to the "green scene," this hotel also recycles and provides separate receptacles to make it easy for guests to separate out their papers and cans/glass/metals.

Features

In-villa breakfast, business center, spa services, baby-proofing, and free transport

A free breakfast is served in each villa whenever guests want it -- meaning any time of day -- and is prepared by a personal chef. American, Indonesian, and continental options are available, and special dietary needs can be accommodated. There is no on-site restaurant, but lunches and dinners can similarly be cooked in-villa for guests by a staff member, and deliveries from area restaurants can also be arranged. Snacks are available throughout the day and an in-villa barbecue, complete with decorations and performances from local musicians, is available. There is no dedicated spa, but a full menu of in-villa services is an option, and treatments include pedicures, massages, and body scrubs.

The 24-hour front desk and computer station make this property convenient for those who absolutely must do work while in Bali (or those actually in town for business). Family-friendly to the core, this hotel offers special baby-proofing options for guests traveling with wee ones, and has an array of items that are tough to travel with (playpens, cribs, etc.). The hotel can even put a pool fence around the villa's swimming pool upon request.

On-site parking is free and the property offers a free airport shuttle. For slightly longer trips in the area, there's free car service and if for some reason the vehicle is busy with another guest, the management will pay for your cab.
