La Villais Kamojang Villa Seminyak

Scene

Mostly modern hotel for travelers wanting to be near Seminyak action

Grand La Villais is in a quiet and secluded area off a fairly busy small lane. The hotel is situated on lush landscaped grounds, with trees, plants, and Balinese statuary -- it all sets a fittingly tranquil tone for a stay here. Guests are greeted with a free welcome drink in the contemporary lobby, a space that's characterized by low ceilings, wood paneling, and beige sofas. It's not the most modern space we've ever seen -- the wood paneling in particular feels lifted from an earlier decade, and the sagging couches are a little unppealing. However, the hotel's centerpiece feature is its large freeform outdoor pool that's nestled in an attractive courtyard with grasses, plants, and Balinese carvings. The pool area is between wings of the hotel, so it doesn't get much sun and the water is sometimes a bit cool. The vibe here is calm, even though it's in central Seminyak. The hotel draws mostly Australian tourists to its large pool, several bars, and location near shopping and dining. The roomy villas are particularly good for families.

Rooms

Spacious, modern rooms and villas with mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs

Rooms and villas at Grand La Villais have a modern Balinese look, though the aesthetic doesn't exactly stand out among the area's other upper-middle-range hotels. The color palette in the villas is a neutral white, cream, beige, and brown, with all-white bedding with rust-colored decorative throws and throw pillows. Regular hotel rooms have a more colorful look, with many sporting salmon-colored walls, plus decorative throws and throw pillows with dashes of orange and red. Rooms are clean and generally in good condition, but some could use a bit of sprucing up to address furnishings, bed covers, and towels. There are occasional issues with mosquitoes in the rooms, but the staff will provide insect repellent and fumigate the rooms.

Rooms range from 280 square feet (26 square meters) to 323 square feet (30 square meters) in the regular rooms and 1,076 square feet (100 square meters) to 2,153 square feet (200 square meters) in the villas. Each of the one- and two-bedroom villas opens to a small private pool, surrounded by a landscaped deck with lounge chairs and thatched-roof gazebo with day bed. Villas also come with indoor open-air living areas, dining areas, and kitchenettes.

All 149 rooms and villas include hot water kettles for instant coffee and tea, water dispensers, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs with 60 international channels (including English channels). Regular rooms have mini-fridges and villas have mini-bars (with room for cold storage) plus DVD players. Some regular rooms feature balconies, and a few of these have pool views. Bathrooms are well designed, and all come with hairdryers. Villa bathrooms have bathrobes and slippers, and separate tubs and rain showers. Smoking and non-smoking rooms are available, and some outdoor public areas allow smoking.

Features

Large outdoor pool with poolside bar, rooftop bar, small spa, and restaurant

Like most inland hotels in the Seminyak area, the pool is the centerpiece at this property. It's large enough for a genuine swim, but fine for cooling off as well (in fact, the lack of sun and occasionally chilly water make that easy to accomplish). Next to the pool is a deck with lounge chairs and a poolside bar. The small spa offers a decent variety of Balinese-style massages and beauty treatments (for a fee). It draws locals as well as hotel guests. In-villa massages and yoga classes are available upon request.

The hotel serves a breakfast buffet with cooked-to-order egg station, bacon, sausages, breads, pastries, cereal, and Asian items. It's available for a fee for most guests. The restaurant also serves a la carte lunches and dinners, with Western cuisine with Asian influences. 24-hour room service is available. The La Villais also serves a Friday evening barbecue dinner, accompanied by acoustic music. In addition to the bar situated poolside, the restaurant has an indoor cocktail bar overlooking the pool. The rooftop bar offers views of the sunset, surrounding area, and beach. The hotel also offers a business center, 24-hour front desk, car rentals, free valet and self-parking, and free airport pick-up for villas guests. The staff can arrange excursions and guided tours, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort, though can require some re-logging in for some guests.
