Bottom Line

Hotel Puri Tempo Doeloe is a boutique upper-middle-range hotel located along a bustling highway, a 10-minute drive (or 20-minute walk) from downtown Sanur and Sanur Beach. The setting is picturesque and tranquil, with sprawling tropical grounds dotted with rustic wooden Javanese cottages, an outdoor swimming pool and pool bar, and semi open-air common areas in which to relax. The 20 guest rooms feature an elegant whitewashed colonial look and are furnished with antiques and artwork from throughout the Indonesian archipelago. Room options include modern suites, cute wooden cottages, and spacious two- and three-bedroom pool villas. Hotel Puri Tempo Doeloe

Scene

Stunning tropical grounds, traditional Indonesian architecture, and stylish interiors full of antiques and artwork

Even though the hotel is located off a main highway, the property itself is serene with minimal traffic noise. The sprawling grounds feature manicured tropical gardens, tall trees, flowing koi ponds, and intricately carved stone statues dotted throughout the gardens. There are plenty of quiet nooks and common spaces for guests to relax in, including a stylish street-side restaurant, a spacious lounge with comfy seating, and an outdoor swimming pool set amongst the tropical garden backdrop. Traditional Indonesian architecture is highlighted throughout and most of the structures on the property are repurposed antique Javanese wooden houses that have a rustic and artistic look, and blend well into the tropical setting. Interiors are highly detailed and are filled with a veritable smorgasbord of antique knick-knacks and furniture from throughout the Indonesian archipelago. Every aspect of the hotel has a personal touch to it and the husband and wife owners (professional interior designers and antique collectors) have lovingly decorated each space.

Most of the hotel's guests tend to be families or older couples. Sanur in general mostly attracts older or more laid-back travelers; most of Bali's partygoers choose to head to Seminyak and Kuta on the southern end of the island.

Location

Located off a busy highway around a 20-minute walk from downtown Sanur and the beach

Hotel Puri Tempoe Doeloe is located along the busy Ngurah Rai Highway, around a 10-minute drive from Sanur. The location isn't overly ideal since nearby dining and shopping options are limited. Downtown Sanur and Sanur Beach take around 15 to 20 minutes to reach on foot from the hotel. Sanur is a sleepy beach resort area lined with restaurants, boutiques, and shops, and there's a scenic white-sand beach lined with cafes, bars, and a long bicycle path. The area is well suited to families and laid-back travelers looking for a more quiet alternative to Bali's party hubs of Seminyak and Kuta. The streets in Sanur are also much less congested and feature large sidewalks for walking, which is uncommon in other parts of Bali. Kuta, Seminyak, and the airport all take around 45 minutes to reach by car, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Two- and three-bedroom pool villas, cute wooden cottages overlooking the gardens, and clean modern suites

The hotel features 20 individuals dwellings divided into two- and three-bedroom pool villas, modern hotel style suites, and a range of wooden bungalows. All units (except for the Superior Rooms) are housed in vintage repurposed Javanese houses, some of which are over a century old. The cute wooden cottages are dotted around the tropical grounds and feature roomy balconies overlooking the lush gardens. Interiors have a rustic whitewashed look and feature a combination of modern and traditional stylings. The decor is eclectic, and features patterned cement Moroccan-style tiles, retro furniture, intricate wood carvings, quality paintings, and vintage black-and-white photographs on display. Rooms are equipped with standard modern amenities like air-conditioning, ceiling fans, TVs, mini-fridges, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and two bottles of water.

The two- and three-bedroom villas are ultra private and secluded with tall walls surrounding each compound. Both room types feature roomy private plunge pools and kitchens. The three-bedroom pool villa compound spans over 3230 square feet (300 square meters) and has two dwellings, a large main house with two bedrooms and a smaller one-bedroom wooden bungalow. The main house includes an indoor and outdoor lounge, a useable kitchen with a four-burner stove and oven, and an internal garden space with a long flowing koi pond.

Bathrooms have a vintage look and a Moroccan-inspired decor with colorful polished concrete features and carved wooden ornamentation. Most bathrooms provide small vanity counters with mirrors, deep soaking tubs, and separate rainfall showers. Toiletries and hairdryers are provided. During our tour of the hotel we noticed that the rooms are beautiful, but have some maintenance issues. We noticed things like peeling paint, musty smelling bathrooms, old TVs, and  ineffective air-conditioners.

Hotel Puri Tempo Doeloe offers a decent amount of facilities and plenty of quiet nooks and common areas in which to relax. The swimming pool is one of the most attractive features of the hotel and tends to be a hub of activity throughout the day. The pool is surrounded by lawns and tropical greenery. There's a small poolside bar serving cocktails, fresh coconuts, and light meals. Puri Esthetic Spa has three spacious and elegantly appointed couples' massage rooms that feature stylish and colorful mosaic-tiled bathrooms with huge soaking tubs. A range of beauty, massage, and hair treatments are offered. Adjoining the spa is a large art gallery with an eclectic collection of antiques and art from throughout Indonesia.
