Bottom Line

The 26-villa, four-pearl Uma Sapna is an artsy design hotel that's surprisingly quiet in spite of its location in the heart of hustling, bustling, and nightclubbing Seminyak. The simply stylish One- and Two-Bedroom Villas have private pools plus flat-screen TVs, sound systems, free Wi-Fi, and minibars. An excellent, cooked-to-order breakfast is included and can be taken in-villa or at the hotel's Asian-fusion restaurant, Kilo. There is an outdoor pool and a full-service spa, but no fitness center. Dusun Villas Bali, in the upmarket Petitenget area, is an alternative for guests looking for similar features in a slightly more laid-back area.

Uma Sapna

Scene

Private, pristine, and personable all-villa hotel

The unassuming entrance to the hotel -- which consists of a tiled-roof and a one-story dwelling hidden behind indigenous shrubbery -- belies the lovely and artistic grounds that lie within the walls of this property. Featuring an art gallery and works by local artisans spread throughout, this hotel offers a unique look into modern Balinese culture, and the sculptures, installations, and paintings all serve to make this tranquil hotel in the heart of Seminyak even more appealing. Despite the artsy inclinations, interiors are stylishly simple, including the lobby, which is set with a few wicker chairs, tile floors, wooden desks and furniture, and the occasional orchid. There are luxe touches throughout, like the marble slab tables in Kilo, the chic, but laid-back, on-site restaurant. Most guests are vacationing families and couples looking for privacy.

Location

Right in the heart of Seminyak, walk to Eat Street and Seminyak Square

For travelers looking to be near Seminyak's hustle and bustle, the hotel is ideally located. The center of Seminyak, filled with restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, is only a five-minute walk from the hotel, while Eat Street, a wildly popular strip lined with still more restaurants and bars, is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. The luxury stores and upscale restaurants of Seminyak Square and the Bintang Supermarket are within a 15-minute walk of the hotel as well. While the walk to the beach isn't necessarily long, it will require lugging one's beach supplies for 15 minutes in the tropical heat. The nightclubs in Kuta, Seminyak's boisterous neighbor to the south, will take about 20 minutes to reach by taxi. Ngurah Rai International Airport is a 25-minute from the hotel.

Rooms

Stylish villas with private pools and local art

With stylish, minimalist tendencies, the hotel's 26 One- and Two-Bedroom Villas embody a simple aesthetic. With clean lines, a design-conscious touch, and plenty of chic muted colors (whites and neutrals are the norm), the villas here are unfussy, light, airy, and appealing. Tile floors, weathered wood window and door frames, handsome light hardwood furniture, and lots of windows mean that nothing detracts from the original contemporary art displayed in most rooms (or the glimpses of the tranquil gardens surrounding the villas). There are plenty of high-end touches, and the materials used throughout include marble, granite, quartz, travertine, and natural stone.

Layouts vary, but generally the villas have lovely outdoor areas with private dipping pools flanked by lounge chairs and gardens; palm trees, grassy knolls, bamboo, and bougainvillea are among the tropical touches. The walls are high enough that there is no worry about neighbors disturbing privacy, which is good since each unit comes with a private sound system. All units have separate living areas, air-conditioning, 40-inch flat-screen TVs, minibars, and coffeemakers. Bottled water is provided free of charge.

Bedrooms are simple but bright, with comfortable beds. Cribs and infant beds are available for free for those traveling with small children. Bathrooms have tubs and showers, as well as dual vanities, with an abundance of high-end surfaces like hardwood and solid polished granite (like the tubs and showers in Executive Villas), plus sleek modern fixtures. Robes and slippers are provided along with toiletries -- including toothbrushes.

Features

On-site restaurant, free breakfast, spa, lap pool, and free Wi-Fi

The hotel's on-site restaurant -- Kilo -- specializes in international fare with Asian flavors. Floor-to-ceiling windows, clean lines, and minimal decor give the space an utterly modern vibe. It is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; room service is also available. Guests may choose to have their free cooked-to-order breakfast in the restaurant or have it delivered directly to their villas each morning. Past guests note that the morning offering is exceptionally tasty, but lacks variety.

The hotel's gallery is a funky place to sit with a coffee and unwind. The space is outfitted with mod and vintage chairs, bright art, and plenty of books to peruse. The on-site spa is a simple, light-filled space, though it lacks a bit of the otherworldly tranquility of other hotel spas in the area. It offers a full menu of quality services, including massages, facials, reflexology, and body scrubs. There is no fitness center, but the main lap pool can be used to get some aquatic exercise and private yoga sessions can be scheduled. There isn't much seating around the pool.

The hotel offers concierge services and can help plan on-site weddings and other events. There is no proper business center, but there are two computers and printers in the lobby, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. On-site parking is also free. Airport transfers and local transportation can be arranged for fees.
