Bottom Line

This 12-room, all-suite hotel practices sustainability and healthy living at every turn -- from geo-thermal power and energy-saving lights to chemical-free paint and organic restaurants. Huge suites feature unique decor and great perks, such as hydrotherapy tubs, free bottles of wine, balconies, and kitchenettes with mini-fridges and coffeemakers. Black Olive is on the pricey side, but its waterfront location is excellent, and it’s unlike any other hotel in Baltimore.

Inn at The Black Olive

Scene

An eco-friendly boutique hotel with original decor

The Inn at Black Olive opened in 2012 and is operated by the same family that runs Baltimore’s Black Olive Restaurant in Fell’s Point. This 12-room, boutique hotel was built from the ground up with holistic, green living in mind. It’s possibly the most health-conscious and eco-friendly hotel in the Baltimore area (and beyond). There’s a geothermal heating and cooling system, solar rooftop panels, and the furniture is made from bamboo and reclaimed river wood. Many of the walls were constructed using an ancient (and eco-friendly) Moroccan technique called Tadelakt, which uses polished plaster, lime, and olive oil soap.

The hotel is filled with antique oriental rugs, colorful landscape photography, and unique paintings made by students from the Maryland Institute College of Art. The paintings, which run the gambit from self-portraits to impressionism, are available for purchase at fairly reasonable prices. Two organic restaurants (a cafe on the first floor and fine-dining rooftop venue) round out this boutique experience.

Fun fact: The actor Woody Harrelson stayed at the hotel for seven weeks while filming a movie and ultimately became an investor.

Location

Walking distance to historic Fell’s Point and Inner Harbor attractions

The Inn at Black Olive is located on a quiet street between the waterfront neighborhoods of Harbor East and Fell’s Point. The area is filled with restaurants and shops, and a parking garage is next door to the hotel. With the exception of Camden Yards ballpark and Johns Hopkins Hospital, most of Baltimore’s top destinations are a short walk away.

  • Four-minute walk to hip restaurants, pubs, and shops in historic Fell’s Point
  • 15-minute walk to the National Aquarium and Inner Harbor
  • Five-minute drive from Johns Hopkins Hospital
  • Seven-minute drive from Camden Yards ballpark and the convention center

Rooms

Huge suites with jetted tubs, balconies, and basic kitchenettes

The 12 suites at Black Olive are huge (starting at 800 square feet) and include ultra-hygienic hydrotherapy jetted tubs, balconies, and kitchenettes with a sink, coffeemaker, and small (or regular) fridge. Select suites have washer/dryer units, and most have harbor views (higher floors offer better views). Organic mattresses and ergonomically designed pillows reportedly make the beds extra comfy. Each suite is named after a Greek wine god and includes free wine (one bottle) and bottled water. Decor-wise, the rooms feature large oriental rugs, minimalist wooden furniture, and original paintings in various styles. Rooms also have live plants and flat-screen TVs.

Features

Two organic restaurants, but few hotel amenities

The Inn at Black Olive has an organic cafe and shop on the first floor that sells everything from homemade ice cream to fresh produce to Greek chicken pies. The rooftop Olive Room restaurant serves organic Greek and international cuisine and offers nice views of the skyline and harbor. It’s open for Sunday brunch and dinner five nights a week. The hotel doesn’t have many other features (no fitness center or pool), but it does offer convenient services like unlimited access to Netflix, free Wi-Fi, and a concierge that will assist with everything from sending a fax to finding a babysitter.
