Bottom Line

The 31-room Baan Wanglang Riverside is a three-pearl option with an excellent setting right on the Chao Phraya. It's a short walk from lively Wanglang Market, and piers are close by for ferries to the historic sights across the water. Rooms and suites are decorated in an attractive Thai-colonial style, and they're well-equipped with flat-screen TVs, kettles, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning. All have balconies, and some have spectacular river views. Three dining options -- a restaurant, cafe, and rooftop terrace -- all provide indoor and outdoor seating with views of the river, which is this hotel's main draw. Another affordable riverfront option is the New Siam Riverside Guest House, which adds a pool and free breakfast.

Location

Riverfront location in Wanglang area, close to markets, attractions, restaurants, and ferry piers

This hotel is situated on the Chao Phraya River in the Wanglang area of Bangkok. It is a four-minute walk from lively Wanglang Market, known for its local street food, as well as clothing and other goods. The neighborhood is packed with plenty of action, including a convenience store, restaurants, historic temples, night markets, and street food stalls. However, it's not the most convenient for walking to tourist destinations. Two piers are within a short walk for taking the ferry to historic sights like The Grand Palace and Wat Pho, or to farther destinations like Chinatown and the flower market. The boat ride to The Grand Palace only takes five minutes. Suvarnabhumi Airport is about an hour's drive away, and travelers should budget the same amount of time to reach Don Mueang Airport.

Rooms and suites are decorated in an attractive Thai style with colonial touches that include traditional dark wood furniture, wooden floors, white linens, and beige and white walls. Red or plum accents and decorative pillows add a splash of color, and elegantly carved wooden panels hang above the beds. Superior Rooms come with king or twin beds. Standard features include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, safes, and kettles for tea and coffee. Some have mini-fridges. Small bathrooms feature open showers separated by shower curtains and wall-hung sinks. Hairdryers are provided and toiletries come in large eco-friendly bottles. Small balconies in Superior Rooms look out over the city, and two rooms have nice views of the river. Suites are larger and add separate sitting areas with two chairs and ottomans. Corner Suites have views of the river from two sides, and balconies are furnished with table-and-chair sets. The Panoramic Suite offers even more stunning views of the river, with floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides. Keep in mind that noise from both the river and nearby traffic can be an issue in some rooms.
