Bottom Line

A family-friendly hotel with 560 rooms over 15 floors, Chatrium Residences-Bangkok is located in Sathon, an area which is not really central to the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, but is nonetheless well connected to the city center. All of the rooms are spacious and have kitchenettes, but some of the furnishings are beginning to look dated and guests complain about rooms which have two single beds pushed together instead of a king-size bed -- and that beds are hard. Property amenities include a meeting room, swimming pool, children's play room, large fitness center, and tranquil spa. The main draw of this hotel is the free-form lagoon-shaped swimming pool set amongst lush greenery. While the immediate area doesn't offer much in the way of restaurants, shops, or attractions, the hotel provides a handful of services to alleviate that stranded feeling. Free hourly shuttles take guests to the sky train station while suites allow room to spread out in decent-sized quarters that include separate living areas, kitchens, and free Wi-Fi.

Oyster Hotel Review

Chatrium Residence Sathon Bangkok

Scene

Modern oriental decor with pretty Thai textiles in the lobby

Sprawling over seven different high-rise towers, the hotel looks rather imposing from the street. Inside the lobby is grand, with pebble colored sofas, Thai textiles and accents, and large windows that give it a sun-drenched feel. There's a small bar in the corner that serves a good selection of drinks, and the lobby/bar area comes alive at night, when candles are put out onto the tables. Most of the common areas are similarly clean-lined and modern. The lush outdoor pool gets good sun for most of the day and is lined with wooden sun loungers and shaded by the fronds of mature palm trees. The breakfast venue is also massive with a beautiful view of the city skyline. This hotel would be best for families with kids thanks to the pool, large rooms, and kids' play area. It's less suitable for single travelers and probably not ideal for couples looking for a romantic getaway as the pool gets rammed with toddlers and inflatables in the high season.

Location

Located in a very quiet and secluded section of Bangkok, far away from the tourist traps

The location isn't brilliant. It isn't dangerous, but there is nothing to see within walking distance in this particular area of Bangkok. It's hard to find any tourist attractions -- there's no nightlife, and few restaurants. The nearest nightspot is Ku De Ta, which is a fun nightclub and takes 15 minutes to reach by bus. There are a handful of well-known chain restaurants nearby, such as Subway and Starbucks. The hotel is close to Central Rama 3 Mall for retail therapy; it takes 15 minutes to get there by foot.

Silom Soi 20 is 25 minutes away on the bus and is an interesting market, full of vendors selling all kinds of Thai treats, fresh produce, and daily goods. Guests should try the khao neow damn sang kaya (sweet black sticky rice with custard). The market ends early in the morning, and a series of Thai street-style restaurants open their doors for lunch and dinner. Wat Hua Lamphong is about 30 minutes away and is one of the largest Buddhist temples in Silom. The golden Thai-style temple contrasts the modern sky-rise of glass and steel that makes up the central business district of Bangkok and is definitely worth a visit. Otherwise, most of the tourist sights are over an hour away on public transport.

Rooms

Rooms are spacious with handy kitchenettes -- but the lack of furnishings on the balconies is a let down.

All rooms have separate living areas and kitchenettes, and come with flat-screen TVs with DVD players, stereo systems, and free (but spotty) Wi-Fi. Elegant, classic decor abounds amid big windows offering views (the best ones being of the pool), polished hardwood floors, and modern rugs. The plain walls have simple framed artwork, most of which are colorful abstracts. Living rooms have stone colored sofas and striped chairs. Kitchenettes are spacious and equipped with full-sized fridges, microwaves, utensils, and crockery. Bathrooms offer marble countertops and soaking tubs and shower combos. The free toiletries are from the Earth Tempo brand. Rooms come with balconies -- but they are unfurnished.

Features

A kids' play room and a gorgeous spa with private treatment rooms

The fitness center has everything from cardio exercise machines to free weights and there are aerobics, yoga, Muay Thai, and other classes to keep the calories off. There's a good-sized steam room, sauna, and whirlpool, the latter being tucked away in its own room with dark wooden slatted windows -- giving it an Oriental vibe. The Green Leaf Spa is an elegant place to relax, with separate treatment rooms that have red drapes hanging from the ceiling and lotus leaves on the walls. The kids' room is a small, sunny space featuring a mini tent and loads of blackboards for doodling the afternoon away, as well as a mini-slide for toddlers. The laundry room is huge and has dozens of coin-operated machines. The restaurant is large and modern looking, with shining wooden floors and dimmed spotlights in the ceiling. There's one meeting/events space for business travelers.
