Bottom Line

The upscale Fraser Suites Sukhumvit offers 163 spacious apartment-style guest rooms in one of Bangkok’s most vibrant areas, Lower Sukhumvit. The stylish, comfortable apartments all have full kitchens and washer/dryers and many have separate bedrooms, though wear and tear is evident. This property is a step above many other apart-hotels with its wide array of features, from a kids' playroom and large pool to two excellent on-site restaurants -- one with amazing Bangkok views. Guests looking to stay closer to Bangkok’s historic sights may want to try Navalai River Resort in Bangkok’s Old Town, which has excellent river views, though smaller rooms.

Fraser Suites Sukhumvit

Scene

Full-service apartments in a chic and tranquil setting

In a modern building on a lively street, the walled-off property creates an immediately peaceful atmosphere with a reflecting pool and small lawns -- both a welcome sight in concrete Bangkok. The long lobby is striking, with a light wood floor running through a wrap-around hardwood ceiling that creates a sleek yet inviting tunnel -- all punctuated by black lacquerware from Thailand’s northwest provinces and decorative brass plates. There aren’t many places to relax in the lobby, save the contemporary couches near the windows, but better alternatives exist throughout the building, including the popular rooftop Above Eleven Bar and Restaurant with great views of Bangkok. Charcoal Restaurant, the excellent on-site tandoori restaurant and cocktail bar, juxtaposes dark minimalism, bright kitsch, and lush tropical vibes. This hotel attracts business travelers, especially with families and on long-term stays, though the value of the full apartments draws tourists and small groups as well.

Location

Trendy street in vibrant Lower Sukhumvit neighborhood

Lower Sukhumvit is a neighborhood of extremes -- from the notorious and seedy nightclubs lining Soi Nana to the trendy upscale restaurants that line the hotel’s block. The hotel is a 10-minute walk to Sukhumvit Road, which is lined with shops, cafes, and plenty of other hotels, making this area particularly tourist-friendly. The Nana Skytrain stop (a 10-minute walk from the hotel) connects to the metro, with trips to the vibrant Silom neighborhood or Chatuchak Weekend Market taking about 30 to 40 minutes. Terminal 21, a massive shopping mall, is less than 15 minutes away on foot, while everything from pirated DVDs to clothes to street food is available at Sukhumvit Road’s night markets. A taxi to the historic sights surrounding the Grand Palace should take about 25 minutes, though that depends on traffic. Suvarnabhumi Airport can be reached in 25 to 40 minutes by cab, or in about 70 minutes using the skytrain connection to the Airport Rail Link.

Rooms

Simple yet stylish apartments with full kitchens and modern amenities

The apartments don’t share the hyper-chic aesthetic of the hotel’s public spaces, but they are simple and stylish. Light wood floors, dark contemporary furniture, and soft gray walls combine with bright throw rugs for a comfortable look. Each unit has a full kitchen with a microwave, electric range, and refrigerator, while also including a flat-screen TV with sound system, safe, iPod dock, desk, and washer/dryer. Studios are large, with neutral-colored love seats, and accented with black-and-white photographs and abstract art over the comfortable beds. One-Bedroom Suites are huge, and have separate sleeping and living areas. Bathrooms are large, with granite vanities, built-in shelves, an array of toiletries, and wall-mounted fixtures. Studios have walk-in showers, while the larger apartments have shower/tub combos. We did notice some dirty grout in the bathrooms when we visited, and though the furniture is in good condition overall, there was evidence of wear-and-tear. Two- and Three-Bedroom Apartments are available for larger families and groups, while Superior One-Bedroom Apartments offer small terraces with decent views of Bangkok.

Large outdoor pool and two excellent on-site restaurants

This hotel is exceptional for its category, as many competing apartment-style hotels offer minimal features for their guests. A large swimming pool lined with black stone and surrounded by a small deck and lounge chairs is perfect for sunbathing amidst the miniature palm trees -- or for keeping kids busy. The hotel has a fitness center with several cardio machines, free weights, and cable machines, as well as a sauna, and there is a kids’ room on-site with plenty of toys and games. The hotel has two great restaurants: Charcoal, which serves an excellent breakfast buffet including made-to-order eggs and outstanding tandoor Indian specialties for dinner, and Above Eleven, the rooftop bar and restaurant serving Peruvian-Japanese cuisine alongside stunning Bangkok views. Wi-Fi is free throughout. Concierge services are available and there is a free scheduled shuttle to Sukhumvit Road throughout the day. A business center and meeting room with audiovisual services are also available, and guests with children can arrange babysitting services with the 24-hour front desk.
