Bottom Line

The Royal Benja is a large, older hotel with over 300 rooms and suites. It has been around almost several decades, and while part of it still has an old style look and feel, some of it has been renovated -- most notably the Grand Deluxe rooms, which now feature contemporary decor. The rooms here in both the Deluxe and Grand Deluxe categories are quite spacious, with sofas and desks, and large wide windows letting in plenty of light. The hotel is set at the end of Soi 5, a side road off of the main Sukhumvit artery, close to endless choices for eating, drinking, and shopping, but the hotel is far enough down the side street to keep things very quiet. The hotel has a small pool and fitness center for guests, and even a snooker room, but its best feature is the classic Benjamas Restaurant with its Art Nouveau decor and buffet spreads offered at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The hotel might be a bit dated in spots, but for the size and comfort, it is decent value compared to the nearby competition.

Royal Benja Hotel

Scene

Diverse clientele from all over the globe, mostly found hanging out at the Art Nouveau restaurant for buffet meals

The main hangout spot at this hotel is in the lobby, where one can find the Benjamas Restaurant, a lobby bar, and an internet cafe. Guests here come from all over the world, and include families, couples, and large tour groups. Most seem to be out and on the go, so you'll only find the hotel really happening in the morning or when everyone gets back at night.

The Benjamas is a throwback classic, with Art Nouveau design and decor; white chairs, stained glass windows, and paintings adorn the spacious interior, and the buffets served here attract a crowd.

Location

Centrally located just off of Sukhumvit Road near restaurants, shops, bars, public transport, and "Little Arabia" on the quiet end of the street

The hotel is located down Soi 5, one of the smaller side streets running off of Sukhumvit Road, which is lined with bars, restaurants, shops, and the sky train stations that connect to elsewhere in the city. The hotel is only a seven-minute walk down Soi 5, but it is at the quieter end of the street, with not too much traffic nor noise, and away from the crowds. The hotel is also a five-minute walk away from "Little Arabia," several side streets so named because of their Middle Eastern restaurants and shops, and visitors from all of the countries in that region.

Rooms

Spacious rooms with sofas and desks; Grand Deluxe feature fresh decor.

The rooms at the Royal Benja are divided into the following categories: Deluxe, Grand Deluxe, and Suites. All of the rooms here are ultra-spacious, especially for this part of town, and thus offer a solid value. Rooms in all categories are furnished with sofas, writing desks, LCD televisions, hot water kettles, mini-fridges, and safety boxes, and all have wide windows letting in plenty of light. The bathrooms come with bathtubs and rainfall showers, and also have a lot of room. The Deluxe rooms miss a few amenities like bathrobes and slippers and do look much older than the Grand Deluxe, which feature modern design. All rooms are carpeted. The biggest drawback here is that none of the rooms come with free Wi-Fi.

Features

Buffet restaurant, internet coffee shop, small pool, and snooker room for game players

The hotel features a rather shallow swimming pool upstairs that has an adjoining sauna, and there is also a fitness center, although it is a bit small and not particularly well-equipped. For other entertainment, the Royal Benja does have a snooker room, and it is a good choice for business groups as the hotel includes meeting rooms and a ballroom. The best features of the hotel, though, are found downstairs. The Benjamas Restaurant has classic Art Nouveau design and serves full buffet breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Also downstairs one can find the E Cafe, where pastries and coffee go with internet connections and computers, and there is even a Lobby Lounge for cocktails and happy hour. There is a spa here but it's really just a small massage shop outside of the hotel, with a beauty salon and massage facilities.
